Getting There

This trail starts at a high altitude and is so close to Whitehorse that you can get off work and be walking along a ridge in the alpine in no time. Once on the ridge, there are many options and ample opportunity for exploring. The trailhead starts at the north end of the lake where the narrow road veers left. The trail continues straight from here. Once the trail starts climbing, it becomes braided and muddy due to frequent horse rides up to the ridge. After an hour or less, you will be above the treeline and have a view of Fish Lake. Continue climbing to the top of the ridge to get a panoramic view of the Bonneville Lakes and Boundary mountain ranges. You have many options at the top of the ridge. To the right (north) is a nice ridge to explore. To the left (south) is a small summit to climb which can continue on to even higher ridges. Straight ahead (west) is a path down to Bonneville Lakes. If you choose to go down to Bonneville Lakes, there is a path along the close side of the lakes that continues south to the end of the lakes. There are places to pitch a tent along the lakes, the most obvious spot being at the very south end of the lakes, about 6kms from the top of the ridge.

From the top of Two Mile Hill in Whitehorse, drive 2 km north on the Alaska Highway and turn left on to Fish Lake Road. Follow this road until you reach Fish Lake (about 15 km). At Fish Lake, you can find parking right away, or try to continue driving for another 600 m to the trailhead along a narrower road.

HikingGreat!

Muddy on the hike up. Nice views at the higher summit. Lots of people turn around at the end of the first climb but it's worth it to keep going. If you're doing the full loop, be mindful at the true summit as the trail down the backside is difficult to find. Take gps or download the tracks and even if you don't find the exact trail you'll eventually link up to it.

Great trail to hike without committing all day. Amazing views from the summit, although be prepared for wind once you clear the treeline. Winter trail is easily navigated with crampons on your boots. Only downside is cramped parking at trailhead - limited space makes it tight with only a few vehicles. Park at the lake and walk to the trailhead will make for a stress-free experience.

Fish Loops awesome, moderate hike(mid fitness level) at times it can get insanely windy so dress accordingly, snowshoes not needed but deep snow if you deviate. You can ski but at parts may need to carry and hike.

It was around -6C today. Nice relaxing walk on the frozen lake. We used snowshoes but I don’t think that they were necessary. Pretty quiet, saw dog sleds a couple of times and one snow mobile. One ice fishing hut set up in the middle of the lake.

Great trail to do if you're pressed for time. Possible to do in about 2.5 hours. Current conditions are snow covered trails, you get about half way and it is confusing where the trail goes as it is covered with snow.

The trail gives a good workout with the steady ascent to above the tree line. We chose the left at the fork that goes down to Bonneville Lakes. There is a small section that is muddy and wet from a wellspring that flows across that section. Beautiful views of the Lakes and mountains adorned with bright yellow colours of Poplars. We reached the endpoint of the trail on the south end of the Lake and doubled back to the point where there should be a trail that traverses the side of the mountain. we found none and we bushwhacked to a point that is a 3rd way up this steep mountain slope. we had to make our way up to the top without any sign of a trail until we reached the top where we eventually found the trail that led us back to the trail head.

Intense bush wacking down the back slope to the lake. Long but fun hike! Fish were jumping like crazy at the lake

HikingOff trail

We did the trail on 6/27/2019. Once we reached the top, we took left to start the loop. At the last "summit" (the highest), the trail becomes invisible, not maintained and we had to go through the bushes to reach the lake. The views at the top were fantastic. Would not recommend for children and people with bad knees as it's very steep. However, if you reach the top and go back, can be done by anyone.

Nice trail, we took our two young children with us and besides the muddy conditions we all had a great time. Spectacular views once tou get to the top.

I did this in March after stretch of 5-6 degree days, which had melted most of the snow from the summits. It was quite doable without crampons or snow shoes. We just did this as an out-and-back to the main summit - it was beautiful up along the saddle, but winds were too strong to stay/explore much. Easy to get to and a nice route.

Loved this trail! We started in the morning and didn’t see any other people until we were almost back. The climb isn’t too long or tough and the views and remoteness at the top is spectacular. The snow was nicely packed down along the trail making it quite easy with spikes. The top is windy as expected, so bring an extra layer. A great hike to start the day!

Great hike, but we didn’t complete whole loop due to lack of time and snow conditions. The view was well worth the effort.

Hiking

Fish Lake Loop is fantastic up to the summit, with a nice view of the surrounding valleys, peaks, and lakes. The hike starts a bit steep but has several forgiving flat stretches and there's a nice breeze up on the ridge. Everything behind the final ridge is worth skipping - the descent is a bit too steep and overgrown, and the view in the far valley isn't worth the extra time it takes to get there. This also had the most bugs of any trail we’ve done up here, and had quite a few swarms follow us. 4 stars if you only go to the summit and loop back from there - that part is definitely worth it.

A great hike with awesome views. Still lots of snow, and lots of melting at the lower elevations. Saw some wild flowers and an eagle.
