Getting There

At the site, there are two cabins. The main cabin on the shoreline was built in 1931. The upper cabin was built in 1932 for Anahareo, their daughter Shirley Dawn, and visitors. Grey Owl, Anahareo and Shirley Dawn are buried adjacent to the upper cabin in a small graveyard overlooking Ajawaan Lake. The trip to Grey Owl's cabin is much more than a hike. It is a pilgrimage that may bring you closer to Grey Owl's message of conservation. Take some time to reflect on his efforts to reach a society which, year after year, moved further from nature. May your visit to this wilderness sanctuary help your understanding of this man and the message of wilderness preservation. "Remember you belong to Nature, not it to you" Grey Owl

Trailhead: Kingsmere River parking lot and day use area - 32.5 km from Waskesiu on the Kingsmere Road.

BackpackingBugsGreat!

A long haul. Easy terrain but just a long hike. No problem for someone more experienced/in shape. If you’re backpacking, definitely the lighter the better (as always). Beautiful scenery, does have lots of bugs though (even into early October when we went). Well maintained trail (some trees down over the path). Nice to have outhouses along the way as well! It definitely would be tough to go out and back as a day hike for sure. We stayed overnight and packed out the next day which was manageable.

Incredibly well maintained trail; This hike is beautiful and takes you through a number of scenic locations and has a few well equipped campsites (with outhouses) along the way

Backpacking

Another example of the fine work the Parks Canada staff do to preserve nature in its purest form. I was lucky to hit a windy day, which kept the bugs away. Only found blueberries around the Northend campsite, but ate a lot of raspberries along the trail. Left the trailhead parking lot at 3pm, arriving at 7:30pm and overnighting at the northend,, hiked the 3.8kms to Grey Owl’s cabin in the morning, then hiked out. Probably wouldn’t do that again as you have to keep a steady pace to do it in the day and a half I had available. Ideally, I think I would backpack all my gear to Sandy Beach, overnight, take a day pack to go to grey owls and back the next day, overnight again, then hike out. One would have more time to swim and soak up the solitude!! Highly recommend!

This is a very nice hike along kingsmere lake. There are four nice campgrounds along the way and parts of the hike are on sandy beaches along the way. Make sure you are prepared for bear and bugs.
