Getting There

Pot Lake Loop is the first of four consecutive loops known as the Bluff Wilderness Hiking Trail in Timberlea, Nova Scotia. The Bluff Trail is located within the Five Bridge Lakes Wilderness Area, designated under the Wilderness Areas Protection Act. This loop is marked with yellow trail markers, and as a difficult wilderness trail should warrant 3-4 hours of planned hiking. Visitors should pack emergency gear and water, and be sure to pay close attention to markers so as not to accidentally wander onto a longer loop. This loop can be used to continue onto Mi’kmaq Hill Loop (the second loop), the Bluff Loop (third loop), or Hay Marsh Loop and complete the entire Bluff trail. Parking Information: A parking lot has been constructed for the trail, with the civic address of 2890 Bay Road. From the lot, visitors can walk onto the Beechville Lakeside Timberlea Trail, and head west approximately 350 metres before reaching the Bluff Trailhead shortly after the highway underpass.

The bus route leading to this trail is the 21. The 21 will lead drop you at Charles Road before Birchdale. From here you will need to walk down Fraser Road and enter at the end of the road.

A good, close to Halifax hike. Took me around 2 hours from my car around the loop, and back to my car. The trail was in good condition, with lots of good spots to take a rest or stop for a sip of water. Only ran into a handful of people on the trail.

Beautiful day to get out - trail was in great shape, not too busy, and was good to get some sun before all the blackflies are out.

Beautiful wilderness especially once you get far enough in that you don’t hear the highway.

Always a great trail! It was drier than I expected but there was a lot of mud and some very icy patches. Icy areas were very obvious, so take it slow mainly around the canoe portages and around the brook crossing.

It was very cool to listen to the icy lake cracking and groaning as the temperature rose. The trail itself is bare in some spots, muddy in a couple of spots but mostly icy. If you have cleats, definitely wear them today and probably for the next couple days as well.

This was our first time on this trail and we really enjoyed it, had some great views, good exposed rock sections and some nice areas for taking a break or a picnic if we so chose. The dog was tired at the end, so that's a win, always love a loop and nice that you can continue on to further loops if you have the time. We will definitely be back to do the longer loops - but maybe in the summer. It was verrrrry icy today, some really tight slick spots on some of the hills and both my husband and I took a couple spills, despite being fairly experienced hikers. Definitely took longer than it normally would, having to take a good chunk of time navigating the plentiful icy sections. But it was a fun adventure anyways and a beautiful day otherwise!

Love this trail. It’s a great hike, lots of variation in the terrain and lots of up and down. Look offs are stunning. Lots of ice today and some muddy spots but overall great!
