We parked at the beginning of split rock trail..walked the dirt road to black beach and started Troy's trail from there! the trail was pretty muddy at spots..and a lot of up hill climbing when coming from that direction! great views for what we could see in the fog! had to be careful with footing around cliff edges and be prepared to climb! some spots have rope in place to help but not all places! The light house was a nice place to take a break and have a meal while looking out at the ocean! There is a spot along the split rock part of the trail where you will find things hanging in the trees..look around in this spot..you will find a rope climbing down to an amazing beach! The climb back up is easier than it looks! Over all ..nice trails! bring lots of water and snacks! My phone recorded almost 13kms and took between 4-5 hours! I don't recommend bringing small children because of the distance and drop offs!

As a Saint John native I hike this trail often. 6 days ago I hiked it on a slightly overcast day and came back in the service road after exiting at black beach. It took me 4.5 hours with several nice breaks (one being at the lighthouse and another at the bench outlook on Troy’s trail). The trail has gorgeous outlooks and continues to be well marked. I was treated with sitings of playful sea dogs, a porpoise, a hare, butterflies and a porcupine. As well I got to watch a fishing boat come back in towards musquash while sitting at the lighthouse. The trail can be slippery and a few of the downhills are becoming a bit eroded although their are well-places ropes to help with this. I enjoy the diversity of the hiking: some climbs, some coastal hiking and some slightly “overgrown” but beautiful and flat meadow areas. Love this trail! So grateful to have this quality trail close to home.

Great trail. It was 17C and overcast on our hike, and it was still beautiful. I understand why my sister says it’s her favourite hike.

This hike was very rewarding. There were views at every turn, and the lighthouse was a great spot for lunch. The kids loved it.

Beautiful forest trail, peaceful, lots of tree shade and ocean lookouts, frequent shallow muddy bits but feet stayed dry, no litter, bugs weren’t bad at all (mid June 2020). Hiked Split Rock Trail to the lighthouse, and Troy Trail to Black Beach (so, 6.3 km), then walked the (mostly uphill) gravel road back to the split rock trail head (1.8 km) for a total distance of 8.1 km. Thoroughly pleasant!

Beautiful views. Some muddy parts of trail depending on recent rainfall. Some steep inclines and declines.

Went after some rain on May 2 2020. awesome views. lots of up hill and muddy in places. Be prepared for some mud if you go in the coming weeks. also lots of uphill treks and could be hard for some. did Troy's trail at the lighthouse and came out on Black Beach. my suggestion is if you start at Split Rock trail, bring 2 cars. Park at beach and drive up the dirt road. I'm so glad we did this today. after 12 km, having to walk way back up the hill would be brutal haha. enjoy the views! Trail is marked very well.

We did this hike a few days ago. Despite the wind and rain we had a great time! Trail was in good shape, constant ocean lookout points and it was cool to explore the split rock!

I am SO glad I moved to New Brunswick. I will hike this trail a hundred times. I wore my rubber Hunter boots which allowed me not to worry about the trail too much (very wet and muddy for a good portion). I didn't go into the cave because I was alone and the sun was setting! Will spend a whole day exploring this area next time. I hope the snow doesn't stick around so I can go back soon! Was totally surprised at the "art collection" - so cool so I won't spoil it for people. xo
