historic site

The Shell Valley, an ancient glacial spillway, features several natural prairies and many wildlife viewing opportunities. The maintained trail transverses through open meadows, an old mill site, black spruce bog, calcium bog and alongside a few beaver dams on the Shell River. The trail to the viewpoint is short, yet steep (rising 70m over a 300m distance) but hikers are rewarded with a spectacular view of the Shell River valley. The lower trail is relatively flat with beautiful views and easy to hike. In the winter, the terrain may be a more difficult to cross as the snow may accumulate quite deep in the open areas. The area is not maintained in the winter.
