Description

The trail starts off by passing over a temporary bridge over the rocky waterfalls (there will likely be no water flowing in summer) and climbing up a hill next to where the waterfalls would be. Upon arriving at the top, there are beautiful views of the river flowing to McGillivray Lake and surrounding landscape. The trail continus through forest before arriving to a viewpoint on the rocky Canadian Shield with even better views overlooking the river and lake in the distance and lush greenery. From there, the trail climbs down a steep rock and enters the thick forest up until it arrives at McGillivray Lake. The path is very narrow in this section and is overgrown on both sides with thick bush. A lot of bushwhacking is involved!. There are no views along this part of the hike. It would be nice if the trail had been better maintained in this section. There was also a lack of signage which may cause some confusion along the way when trees were downed across the path. Having the map downloaded will help a lot in these spots. The trail can be muddy and wet in some areas as well and you will probably want to be wearing hiking boots. Eventually, the trail leads up to McGillivray Lake. McGillivray Lake is gorgeous. There is a covered shelter and a firepit on the rocks overlooking the lake which is a great place to enjoy a picnic lunch. It is so peaceful! From McGillivray Lake, the trail follows along the same path as the one that led there. There is a junction in the trail with a number 10 on a post which is where you turn right to take the loop back to the parking lot. This section of the hike follows through a mixture of forest on a wider path and across the rocky Canadian Shield with great views of the landscape. Right before arriving at the parking lot, there is a steep climb down the rocky trail. Please note: off line map is recommended to get oriented as several users have reported that this trail is not well marked.

Did this trail years ago. Don’t be like us and accidentally get on the centennial portion of the Transcanada Trail (stay left; don’t take the trail on your right at the beginning!).

Difficult for non-hikers lol. Lots of steep incline before you head back on the 2.8 km loop.

Loved it! Wear proper shoes for hiking as the trail is very rocky in spots and steep. Very beautiful landscape with some very narrow spots with trees on either side. No bugs at the time we went. Would do it again for sure.

Overall a great hike, however when we went in the summer the falls were completely dried up. Also, we found the trail was not marked well and we got a bit lost - ended up doing an extra few km on the Trans Can trail in order to find our way back. We really enjoyed the rocky terrain! As an additional note: the washrooms here are AMAZING compared to most outhouses.

Beautiful trail took us 2 hours total as a group of 8 going at a fairly good pace, with a break for a snack at McGillivray lake. Challenging and fun hike!

The trail was an interesting hike! A great way to spend time with our older teens. The trail was challenging terrain for some alternating with easier spots. The scenery was beautiful, and there were many photo opportunities available.

The first part of this trail contains gorgeous scenery around every corner. Once the trail gets into the mostly wooded area, we had a bit of confusion about where the turn-off for the short loop was, so we ended up turning around. This was okay though as we got to experience the great views a second time.

Love the hike. It was easy, wear grippy shoes so you don't slip on any rocks. Glad we wore long pants cus there were alot of branches scratching your legs.

Great moderate hike. The trail was a bit tight in some spots due to growth but it was a great day out there. Water was nice for a dip and bugs weren't bad at all.

The trail was good, the path was narrow in many spots. We took our dogs and there were quite a few places which we rather steep which was interesting with dogs on leash’s.
