The West Lion Hike is a 11.6 mile moderately trafficked out and back trail located near West Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada that features beautiful wild flowers and is only recommended for very experienced adventurers. The trail offers a number of activity options and is best used from May until October.
This trail takes you to the most iconic mountain in the backdrop of Vancouver's skyline. You start the trail at the top of Cypress Bowl. Park your vehicle near at the top, where everybody else would park to ski for the day. The beginning of the trail winds through the Cypress ski resort, but soon you will find yourself looking back upon the resort as you climb up St.Marks peak. After St.Marks you will climb down a ways and begin your climb through old growth forest up Mt.Unnecessary. Disregard the name cause traversing this beast is "Necessary" if you want to claim the summit if the West Lion. This mountain seems to go on forever. Up and down up and down. Once you get out above the tree line you will have clear views on the Lions, east and west. Keep on going until you reach the base of the West Lion. At this point you will have to make the decision weather or not to climb to the true summit. Your pretty much on hands and feet the whole way up. Some areas leave you completely exposed. The summit is AMAZING! Come back the way you came.
