Steep knee cracker of a hike up more than 1200m elevation in approximate 6km. Gorgeous, large mountain lake. Lower pierce lake is the main attraction, upper pierce lake add another 2.5km and 300m elevation.
great hike up to lower pierce lake this weekend. Loads of blow down on the trail from the last windstorm which was very taxing. Snowline is at roughly 900m elevation. Looks like the whole north face of MacFarlane has avalanched. we stayed the night and it snowed roughly 10cm overnight. snowshoes were a great asset after 1000m elevation, unless you like postholing.. you will also need to do some route finding in the upper section of the trail due heavy snow.
Definitely a challenging hike. First few km’s are pretty relentless, then there’s some ups and downs (still mostly up though). Parts of the trail are really narrow. No snow until after Lower Pierce Lake, lots of fresh animal tracks in the snow. Heard a loud pack of coyotes on the way down for awhile coming closer until we crossed back over the river.
Camped overnight for 2 nights, first at the lower lake by the waterfall and second night at the upper lake. No toilets or bear caches. Found lots of human feces around the campsites. At the upper lake, the trees are too small to hang the food safely. Very hard hike. Steady incline the entire way with large steps. Definitely have proper footwear, poles are helpful too especially going downhill. Warning! Car got broken into in the parking lot. Don't leave anything in your vehicles even if you have a cover in the back.
A lot of vertical. Bring proper shoes. Muddy parts are really muddy. But not a lot of mud on the trail. Great view at top. If not camping, expect to take the whole day. Okay amount of bugs.
Hard hike, closer to 20km. Amazing views the entire time after the first lake!
We went to Upper Pierce Lake. There is no doubt there is some serious elevation gain but this is the most beautiful hike I’ve done. Highly recommend! Great trail that’s well marked and easy to follow
Solid trail, great views, but definitely a hard one, especially on the knees.
