Lone Cone Mountain is on an island in front of Tofino. The trail has a stunning view of Tofino and the surrounding area. You have to take a taxi boat to get to the trailhead.

1h50 up. Begin very muddy. Glad we had good hiking boots. Nice forest. Pretty steep trail. Unfortunately, at summit we had only clouds. Going down again is a bit boring. Considering the expensive water taxi, I recommend doing it on a clear day so you enjoy the fullest. The next day, man...did we have some muscle ache...it was our first hike of the holiday.

very difficult but definitely doable. average fitness level took us 2hrs up 1hr40 down well worth the work for the view. Clayoquot Connection out of Jamie's Whaling Station is the way to get there, Dennis was great.

Amazing trail hike with a beautiful view to top it off. I completed the hike on Sunday taking 2h20 to get up and 1h40 to get back down with many breaks both ways. I highly recommend this hike but come prepared with suitable footwear and ankle support as the roots and mud can be quite treacherous on the way down.

Awesome hike. Little muddy at the beginning and then gets steep. Sweet views of Tofino on a clear day. Going at a quick pace 1.5hr up and and 1hr 10 mins down.

Breathtaking views from the summit! Brought along a strong mountain dog and he handled himself fine. Prepare for some mud for the first km in and then trail gains in elevation. Took the Tofino Taxi to Meares. We were 4.5 hours dock to dock with a pleasant picnic on top (:

Be prepared. Difficult trail with lots of scrambling. Initial portion was a bit muddy. About 2.5 hours up and 2 hours down moving at a decent clip. Views at the top are spectacular and well worth the effort. Descent is just as difficult as the ascent. There is a small Howell on the island where you can buy drinks and they have bathroom facilities.

One of the best hikes in BC but be prepared, this trail is HARD! It's rated as intermediate in some websites but don't be fooled by it. This hike is honestly difficult but the view at the end makes it worthwhile and at the top, you can rest up for an hour then go back down again. Wear proper hiking shoes because this hike can get hands on with mother nature and it's no joke. Bring lots of water and electrolytes as well! This hike will definitely test your quads!

on the way down I slipped fell off a rock and hurt my ankle. I was just 50 meters from the end of the trail. Since I didn't show up back the water taxi called rescue folks. I had no cell phone. But they eventually found me I was scared of getting eaten by wolves. Took a big stick to defend myself. lesson learned never hike alone without cell phone and don't spend too much time on the time because the sun goes down faster than you expect especially in the mountain environment.

Wow, an iconic Tofino hike but a extremely different experience than expected. We used Tofino Water Taxi because they had easy, set prices on their website. The hike can get up to an 88% incline and was tough, there is no switchbacks but rather just straight up. This is more of a ‘hands on’ hike where most of it is spent climbing over fallen trees or finding your way through very steep roots and rocks rather than following a typical path. Very well marked and the view is worth it in the end! Definitely do-able for a determined person of medium fitness but bring bug spray!!!

This is not a recent review by any means but All Trails finally added this hike to their list. I hiked in May 2016 and I’ll just start by saying THIS TRAIL IS NOT MODERATE, IT IS VERY HARD!!! The incline is incredibly steep most of the way up and you are definitely scrambling. You are in a rainforest on an island. Don’t let the elevation gain fool you!! Hiking shoes are a must and bring lots of water. Also the trail can be very difficult to follow at some points. But what makes this hike 110% worth it is the view at the top. You are above the clouds and the islands below literally look like the Philippines. Incredible. Took us probably 3 hours to get up (with lots of breaks) and 2 1/2 down. Down is just as hard as going up with this one.

Awesome view and trail. Be prepared to jump over mud and between logs on the approach. Also the steep section is mostly roots or slippery clay, so watch out on your footing. Great if you’re up for the challenge :)

Lots of terrain, lots of logs you have to go under or over. Long hike. Can take anywhere from 4-6 hrs. 3 if you’re an expert. Beautiful views up top

this hike should 100% be rated as HARD. went with a group of 6 people, and at one point all of us took turns suggesting giving up.. if it werent for the motivation of each other we would not have made it to the top!! ALL of us go to the gym regularly and I would say about average for fitness. LOVED the view it was worth it, but too hard I will never do it again. definitely reccomend if you like long hard hikes with amazing views. bring a drone if you have one !!

The boat ride to the island is great especially as you see lone cone clearly looming as you approach. Don’t let the short distance fool you, it’s a tough climb and 10/10 agree the hike down is just as hard if not harder. Don’t believe this trail should be rated as moderate. You begin at sea level, hike in through some bog and forest for a couple k at a fairly easy incline, then boom, up you go. Over fallen trees, under others, and not spindly ones. Youre at a consistent 40% , some areas as steep as 90% incline. It’s no joke. You’re climbing through rainforest so the humidity ensures you have a sweat on the entire way. Book your boat ride for the morning and then they will pick you up at a prearranged time. Hike takes 5-8 hours , the trip down takes just as long if not longer. If you find yourself a little late, there is cell service almost the entire way so you can call the water taxi. When they were taking us over they told us there is no shame in not making it to the top, many people they bring over don’t, some have even tried a few times. But I tell you, it’s worth the push! On a clear day you have a 360 degree view of the Clayquot Sound. It’s breathtaking.

Make sure you go on a clear day for the view! Fun and challenging hike. The first, flat section of the trail was boggy so be prepared to sink into some mud if it's rained recently! Definitely happy I was wearing boots and not trail runners.

Great hike. Amazing views and old growth cedar forests. It’s well marked, but lots of roots, trees, and rocks to climb over. Getting down is as tough as going up. This hike Is much more on the “hard” end of the scale, and can be quite challenging esp above 300m elevation. You’re asked to pay $10 per hiker at the camp steward station. Well worth it though.
