Following a strenuous initial push (same route as Tunnel Bluffs), the Hat Mountain trail begins at the fork to Tunnel Bluffs. Following posted signs and maps, the ascent to 1200m asl is fairly straightforward. Follow posted signage at all intersections. The final push (above 1450m asl) is a class 3 scramble up a hillside, often requiring crawling and climbing. Snowpacks remain in late July; crampons strongly recommended. The entire trail is marked with yellow markers, except the final 1-2 km (1450m - 1600m asl), which are occasionally marked with orange and pink ribbons. This hike took us 6 hours moving time, 8 hrs total -- plan for at least 10 hours to not get caught in the dark.
