Note: South of the Tunnel Mountain Trail, on the western slope of Tunnel Mountain, is closed until June 30th, 2019 for elk calving. Tunnel Mountain Trail is open during this time. Tunnel Mountain is a short hike to an amazing viewpoint on top of the mountain overlooking the town of Banff and surrounding scenery. The trail begins from Tunnel Mountain Drive in Banff. It follows along long, nicely graded switchbacks along the side of the mountain through the forest. Some of the switchbacks are steeper than others and some of them level out which provides a chance to catch your breath. There are some glimpses of the views along the way through the trees. The best views can be seen from the top of the mountain at the end of the trail. There are some bare rocks surrounded by forest which are perfect places to sit and admire the views overlooking Banff and the surrounding mountains and valleys. It is beautiful! Would recommend this short hike for a good leg workout and opportunity to see great views.

Excellent family hiking trail. Dog friendly.

Trail and mountain is wonderful. However it’s full of rude and inconsiderate tourists that don’t have respect for our nature. People not staying on the trail and damaging the mountain.

A bit muddy after some rain yesterday, but a great short hike. Pretty steep switchbacks at the beginning but overall not too difficult.

Super easy, very popular, best in the eve or morning!

This hike is easy to moderate depending upon ones fitness level. Nice views at the top. On one side you will see Banff town right beneath Sulphur Mountain and on the other side you will see spectacular views of Bow River. Highly recommended.

This is an amazing viewpoint. The hike is a few switchbacks only and gets you away from busier areas like down town Banff and lake Louise area.

good view.

Very good path. I would say easy-moderate, as it’s always climb up, although pretty slow and steady. Has good view on Banff and Bow river. On return, if you didn’t arrive in a car, continue your way down on Tunnel Mountain drive and you will shortly reach Bow falls and Famous Spring Hotel. Then nice, easy and short walk along the ricer to the downtown

Great hike. It exceeded our expectations well worth the trip up. The views were amazing especially of the golf course that I played the day before. You can actually see views from both sides of the mountain.

Don’t be put off by the start! The first part from the car park is the steepest. Once past the second road there are relatively gentle switchbacks most of the way up. I saw lots of family’s with small children, a few trail runners and one crazy guy running with a sports pushchair..?! Definitely not pushchair friendly, but a good leg stretch with fantastic views of Banff and down The Valley the other side of the mountain. Lovely walk accessible straight from the main town. It took us less about an hour to get up from the centre of town. Would do again!

We had a nice sunny day, the views at the top were beautiful overlooking the Bow River, Banff town centre, golf course and the surrounding mountains. This was a nice easy walk, very busy but definitely worth doing.

Our family enjoyed this hike but didn’t find it to be as rewarding as others nearby. The views of the town and golf course are lovely.

If there was something between easy and moderate, this would be it. And it's gorgeous!

The hike took an hour and 45 mins. Would be a good trail for trail running. The hike wasn’t difficult but I still felt like I got some exercise. Nice views of Banff along the way.

Walked to the trail head from the place we stayed in the town of Banff. Super easy to access. The incline was steeper than anticipated, but was worth the views. Even though the hike is shorter than some others in the area, it provides many great vantage points to view the surrounding peaks and the town. When hiking back down, it was pretty crowded, but I hardly ever had to stop and wait for others before continuing on my way. Took our time and it was about 70’ up, 50’ down. No bathrooms at the trailhead, but there are public ones in the town.

Pretty accessible trail considering the view you get at the end. Hardest part is leaving the bottom parking lot to the higher parking lot. Lots of kids and semi--in-shape elderly along way too.

Easy trail near to the town, good views and not too steep on the way up.

We did this hike the July long weekend this year and thought it was great! The views were really beautiful, and we saw an elk ! I would recommend this hike. It took us about 1.5 - 2 hours up and back. It’s steep in a few parts but then it flattens out. Very enjoyable!

I think it's easy not moderate. Took me only an hour to get to the top. Amazing view. would do it again

This is a nice, moderate trail for any experience level. The initial switchbacks aren’t too steep, but with full day packs we took our time on the ascent. The views of Banff from the top are absolutely worth the climb, as well as a few opportunities to see Mt Rundle that are breathtaking. We stopped for pictures at several points along the trek, and discovered a small side trail that gave an even better vantage point of Banff. Definitely worth the climb, can be done in a fairly quick time.

An enjoyable, quick trail. Steep in parts, but mostly moderate. Family friendly, highly trafficked, and a really pleasant view from the top. A lot of bang for your buck.

Nice easy hike with nice views of the town of Banff. We got there at 5am for a sunrise hike. We parked at the top parking lot on Tunnel Mountain Dr. We saw 2 couples (one with kids) on our way down. Great for kids, dogs, and if you’re looking for an short hike close to Banff.

Maybe a little more than we were hoping to bite off on our first day in Banff! But it got our hearts going and the views at the top are fantastic. Would definitely err on the side of moderate vs easy if you aren’t in hiking shape. Views along the way help distract if you are struggling! Also agree that steepest part is from lower lot to upper lot. would recommend. Just beware of some crowds!

This was a perfect first-day hike in Banff. It’s got some steepness to start getting conditioned, not too long but will definitely serve as a workout. Great views throughout, but some incredible views from the summit make the destination extra rewarding. Note- if you park at the lower parking lot and hike up to the trail head, that’s the steepest part of the whole hike... don’t fear!

A well-groomed trail that rewards the hiker with wonderful views of the the town of Banff, as well as the "back-side", with the Banff Springs Golf Course, the Bow River and Mount Rundle. Originally hiked this trail in 1984, was nice to see it again this summer.

The first mountain I’ve ever climbed! It was raining so the trail wasn’t crowded at all, encountered a few other hikers that were also braving the weather. Beautiful views of the city and hotel, even with low visability. Never felt strained and had a killer time.
