The Upper Sunwapta Falls are right next to the road and barely require a walk. The Lower Sunwapta Falls can be found via the route shown on this page. The Sunwapta Falls is a beautiful waterfall that can be accessed via a short hike from the Icefields Parkway. These falls are located south of Jasper and make for a perfect place to stop. The short trail leads through the peaceful forest to the falls. They are powerful and loud! There are great photo opportunities and views from along the trail and on the footbridge that crosses the deep canyon. The scenery around the falls is so pretty as well with pine tree forests and mountain peaks as the backdrop. After crossing the bridge, the trail continues for another ~2 km to the Lower Falls. These are smaller and not as impressive, but still beautiful to see. There is a chain link fence along the trail on the edge of the rocks to prevent you from getting too close to the falls and edge of the canyon. There is plenty of parking at the lodge, where they also sell snacks and gifts and have washrooms.

Loved the short hike to the lower falls! The trail head is up a hill to the right, just before the bridge.

I hiked to the trail to Sunwapta Falls and the lower falls on July 30, 2019. This trail is located along the Icefields Parkway, about 54 km south of Jasper. The short and easy trail led through the forest to the first set of waterfalls from the parking lot. A bridge crossed the canyon and had amazing views of the falls, canyon and mountains! The falls were powerful and impressive to see as they rushed through the narrow canyon. After crossing the bridge, the trail continued for another 2 km further to the lower falls through the quiet forest and along the edge of the canyon with a fence along the path. Most people just stopped to see the first falls, so it was very peaceful and much less busy. The trail was downhill on the way to the second set of falls and a gradual uphill on the way back. There were lots of roots and rocks to navigate. The scenery around the lower falls was so beautiful with the mountain backdrop and canyon. Definitely worth continuing further from the upper falls if you have the time. The trail is about 3 km round trip.

This trail was a pretty easy trail and accessible to most everyone. The only thing is this trail was pretty muddy which is to be expected with the extreme amount of rain Alberta has had this year, but the falls are gorgeous with the excess amount of water flowing through the falls. The tree roots can be slippery when wet, but just mind your footing and you will be fine.

A very nice and mild trail down to the lower waterfalls. Much less crowded than the main falls near the parking lot. Beautiful falls and canyon.

The Sunwapta Falls was a pretty waterfall that could be accessed via a short hike from along the Icefields Parkway. These falls were located south of Jasper and made a perfect place to stop. I visited in August 2017. The short trail led through the peaceful forest to the falls. The Upper Falls were situated along a river and were beautiful to see. They were powerful and loud! There were great photo opportunities and views from along the trail and on the footbridge that crossed the deep canyon. The scenery around the falls was so pretty as well with pine tree forests and mountain peaks as the backdrop. After crossing the bridge, the trail continued for another ~2 km to the Lower Falls. They were smaller and not as impressive, but still beautiful to see. There was a chain link fence along the trail on the edge of the rocks to prevent you from getting too close to the falls and edge of the canyon. There was plenty of parking at the lodge, where they also sell snacks and gifts and have washrooms. I would recommend stopping to visit these waterfalls.

Most people only see the upper falls which are a very short walk from the parking area. The lower falls are also very beautiful and worth a visit. The trail to the lower Sunwapta Falls is not particularly scenic until you approach the end as it does not provide views of the river. It can be a bit steep in certain places as well.

Stopped by and did a quick walk due to it raining and being chilly. Very nice falls!

Arrived late afternoon, not many people were around, and most of those who were didn't bother going down to the lower falls section. Would probably be very busy during the day. Nice and easy walk, good for a stop off while driving the highway.

Relatively busy and has lots of fencing.

There was quite a crowd at the parking lot and upper falls, but only a small number of people walk the easy trail to the lower falls. Definitely worth the extra time to go down there and check it out. Don't stop at the bench when you get there - keep walking a bit more to see even more!
