Sulphur Mountain Trail is an alpine switchback pathway which leads to the summit ridge of Sulphur Mountain. The mountain is based in Banff National Park in the Canadian Rockies and overlooks the small town of Banff in Alberta, Canada. Once at the top, visitors can also check out the historic Cosmic Ray Station on Sanson Peak. After 7pm or anytime during the winter, visitors can take the Sulphur Mountain Gondola ride down the mountain for free. Other times the gondola is $30. The Sulphur Mountain trailhead starts from the Upper Hot Springs parking area. This is a moderate hike with amazing views of the Bow Valley.

Nice ebbs and flows. Took about an hour 45 to get up. Gondola is free down until May. Unfortunately pure fog when I went so no views but great hike.

Switchback style trail with a few views of the Vally as you go up. Brilliant views once you summit. It’s a treat that you can grab coffee and a snack at the gondola facility.

it’s a good winter hike, we started 1335 today and we reached the false summit 1609 and add another 15 mins to 20 mins hike to the true summit. this is our first winter hike for 2018 with my close friend and my partner. And it’s challenging but were on full gear lol we have our spikes for our shoes and hiking sticks. it is indeed a moderate hiking trail. once you reach the top, you’ll see amazing views of the mountains during winter and you’ll see the famous banff fairmont hotel.

Intense workout with a great reward at the end!

Love this trail for its elevation gain/switch backs that make you work thru the entire hike, also, love the option to hike down the backside of Sansen to the Cave and Basin to change it up on the way down. Extend the hike at the top by walking the boardwalk to the cosmic ray station. Amazing views of Banff are a nice bonus :)

Waiting for the snow to come and it’s on it’s way but want to keep the legs in shape! It was icy so hiked it with poles and cleats. Lovely views on the way up. It took us around 1.5 hrs to get to the top. Once there we treated ourselves to a lovely lunch and warm washrooms and then took the gondola down for free. Then, off to the hot pools for a soak! A lovely outing!

Steep switchbacks to get to the top. Worth it once you are up. You get to see a beautiful panoramic view of the mountains! There is a great place at the top for lunch and refreshments . Free gondola on the way down . You can also take gondola up to the top if you are unable to hike for a charge .

A steady incline of infinite switchbacks. A much better way than paying $60 on the gondola to get up Sulphur, but not the most interesting of hikes. Most of the time is spent switchbacking under the gondola.

Steep but short. It was fun and you have have lunch at the top!!!

Great hike, not much views but nice one at the top

Did it on October 10th. There was some snow on switchback corners but nothing you can’t handle. It was decently strenuous but if you are determined, you will get thru.

This trail is a must. Either you pay $60 to take the gondola up or hoof it up. You do have the option to pay $30 for a ride down. It's about 3.5 miles up and it's a tough one. Not really for beginners but it is manageable. Ice at the top. Made it without spikes. Views at the top are INCREDIBLE! However you get up...get up there.

Did this in early October, micro spikes were useful at tail end

Very hard work getting up Sulphur Mountain but so worth it for the monumental views and sense of achievement once you reach the summit.

As a fairly fit younger person this was a little to moderate effort for a pretty good reward, with great views from the top. The extra 500m boardwalk was worth it to get a different perspective too. I hiked this with my parents who are both mid 50's and not in great shape but were able to get up without too much difficulty. It wasn't as crowded on the trail as I thought it would be, which was nice, but as expected the top of the gondola viewing area was pretty busy.

Stated ELEVATION GAIN is WRONG. Actually about 2300ft, (700m). Very easy graded trail. They don't come any easier.

Insane 360 degree views from the top of Sulphur. Plenty of tourists, but as these tram/gondola things go, fairly mellow and not overly commercialized.

Free Gondola rides down after 7pm.

First hike guided by my wonderful daughter, we did this the day after we landed in Calgary. Felt Some switch backs are a bit hard so take time out and keep going. Every step taken will be rewarded once we get up there to Cosmic Ray Station.
A wonderful experience with awesome views.

Great hike, and much more rewarding than the gondola. Kids 7 and 9 were able to hike up and down. Also nice to have the visitor centre at the top, for a snack and washroom break. Can also refill water bottles there. 2 hrs up, and 1.5 hrs down.

Took us about 3 hours to get to the top. The switchback makes for a less steep hike. The top is extremely busy due to the gondolas.

Quite a busy trail! It does zig-zag a lot- which my boyfriend said made him feel as though we weren't making much progress. However, I thought the trail was amazing, curved enough to make the trek up not too steep. And the top aligns with the gondola, so you get to experience a wonderful view/walk around the top of the mountain!

Did this hike with my 5 and 9 year old boys and we had a great time. Very busy trail, but we saw a grizzly and 2 cubs 10 minutes into the hike!
We took the ROAM bus to get there and it was perfect. To note: there is a water fountain in the building on top so we were able to refill our bottles for the walk down.

Definitely a workout of a hike, steep incline and lots of switchbacks. Slightly disappointing at the top with so many people who've just taken the gondola up but the views still can't be beat. Head to the "Quiet Side" to the left when you first reach the top as it was completely empty when we were there. Make the 1.6km trek to where you can climb some rocks and see some long horned sheep! Overall I'd recommend doing this for sure!

Best way to see banff. It kinda sucks that there is a gondola that takes people up, so the summit is always packed, but at the same time, its also sucks for the price of it as well. Honestly not too hard of a hike either; just mentally is a bummer when you've worked so hard, only to see an absurdly crowded summit. I would recommend this though if you are not about paying for the gondola.

The hike is steep with continuous elevation gain following switchbacks until you reach the top. I didn't think the trail was too crowded especially when you compare it to visiting Lake Louise or Lake Moraine. The visiting center at the top is over crowded, but the views are spectacular and you have the feeling of accomplishment of hiking up compared to all the gondola riders who wouldn't have made it a quarter mile hiking. There's even Starbucks coffee in the visitors center.

Not a bad hike but it is extremely busy with tons of tourists on top. Also, it just follows an old road up the mountain under the gondola. The views are good, but Banff has many more spectacular views.

The air gets pretty thin up top so make sure to prepare. Wonderful hike nonetheless with beautiful views of the Rockies.
