To find trailhead: make sure to head down the TransAlta road across from the little parking lot, follow road for 1km, turn right at snowshoe sign, and hard left after the creek by the pink/ orange ribbon to head straight up hill onto the trail.

This hike was fast and sweet. Good cardio. Defined trail.

Many better options in the area IMO, however it is good choice if you are looking for a shorter hike. The trail leads you through dense forest with no views until you are pretty much at the top.

Absolutley beautiful hike. Very steep and steady incline the entire way. Use the map to keep on the trail for the first 1km then it becomes clear. Trees will open up to an incredible view of Peter Lougheed park including Lower and Upper Kananaskis lake. Hiking poles are helpful for the descent.

Amazing hike, well worth the panoramic views at the top. Definitely not for the faint of heart or beginner hiker.. Very steep straight up hill through dense forrest for about 4km before opening up to the views. My boyfriend completed it this time of year (mid-April) without crampons or poles, but I probably wouldn’t have made it down without them. Snow was well packed but lots of slippery spots. Completed in about 4 hours up & back with a lunch break. ***To find trailhead: make sure to head down the TransAlta road across from the little parking lot, follow road for 1km, turn right at snowshoe sign, and hard left after the creek by the pink/ orange ribbon to head straight up hill onto the trail***.

Easy to follow winter trail, good pack for micro-spikes. Stunning views once you get above tree line.

Be prepared to hike up the elevation in the first 4km. This is steep! Hands in your pocket hiking, however be sure to bring lots of water and snacks. A solid half day hike (4 hours) which included several breaks. Not a great hike for new hikers, as the steepness may be off-putting. Gorgeous views from the summit (beyond the first false summit) of Kananaskis lakes and the beautiful ranges around the area. Gorgeous trail.

Got in our first hike of the season this May long and tackled South Lawson Peak. It took approximately 3 hours of very steady up, up and more up with some powering through knee to thigh deep snow for us to reach our destination. By the time you reach the top your legs will definitely have a bit of a burn. Our lunch spot was absolutely breathtaking and I could have sat there all afternoon! Unfortunately it was cut short as the ticks decided they too were looking for some lunch! By the time we got off the mountain we had removed about 15+ ticks from our clothing and packs. Despite the ticks; definitely would recommend this hike.
