Did the Loop on 06/26/2020 and tacked on Devil's Thumb and Big Beehive. There is still quite a bit of snow on Piran and the majority of switchbacks are covered in snow. Poles definitely recommended, but would not say that crampons are necessary! The backside is incredibly steep so the poles definitely came in handy here. The snow was no bad at the bottom, but it would be very nice to do in a few weeks! Beautiful views and a great thigh burner

We hiked up from Lake Louise to Lake Agnes and the Tea House then continued on to Big Beehive. Bring cash (Canadian preferably) if you want any snacks from the tea houses but they can get a bit crowded. View from the hut on top of Big Beehive is stunning, and worth the small scramble over rocks to get there at the top. We continued down Highline to the Six glaciers trail, the final climb up what feels like shear shale rock is a little dicey. It’s much easier going up than coming down so plan accordingly. Final leg along the edge of Lake Louise is a long paved path that gets crowded during the mid day but is a great reprieve from the constant up and down of the previous 10 miles.

The trail up through the switchbacks is quite manageable for a moderately difficult hike, straightforward and not technically challenging. I particularly enjoyed the views coming down the loop trail although it’s not as clearly defined especially after half way down. I ended up doing an unintentional short cut which was very steep and slippery when wet, poles were a life saver. I preferred this hike over Devil’s Thumb.

The hike up to Mt saint Piran was good. It was a easier “difficult” hike up due to the switchbacks. However, we couldn’t find the trail coming down from the summit and had quite a difficult time getting down that way. I suggest doing the out and back version of mt saint Piran rather than the loop.
