Description
Waypoints (0)

This family-friendly trail features gorgeous views of the bright blue water of Moraine Lake and snowcapped mountain peaks all around. Canoes can be rented for use on the lake. The best time to visit is in July or August because snow and ice can remain on the lake and trail through May or early June. Seasonal closures and restrictions apply to this trail. Please check ahead before setting out for the hike. There is a parking lot with 150 spots but it fills up early. There is also an option to use a free shuttle that runs every fifteen minutes from Lake Louise Overflow car park between 8 AM and 4:15 PM from mid-September to mid-October. There are bathrooms by the parking lot as well as a cafe that is open seasonally. Another shuttle runs from Banff but has a cost of $10. Bears are common in this area so carrying bear spray and hiking in tight groups is suggested. This trail is not considered stroller or wheelchair friendly due to multiple steep sections above a 12% grade. This trail is partially boardwalk and partially packed dirt. It it typically at least two feet wide. Most of the trail has a grade less than 5% but the steepest sections have up to a 15% grade and are at about 0.3 miles and 0.7 miles. This trail may be doable for wheelchair and stroller users with assistance.

Trail Completed: October 2020 We were in the Lake Louise area and decided to try to get into Moraine Lake, and succeeded. On a normal day, I'd probably have gone and done Consolation Lakes or maybe even Larch Valley. But it was a cold and rainy day and stuck to this shorter alternative. Even with clouds covering the mountains, the lake had a gorgeous blue color. Some of the bridges had big puddles, which had to be avoided. Part of the trail also seemed washed away, but the trail was wide enough so that wasn't a problem. We completed about 75% of the trail because it started snowing. Couple problems, but 5 stars because of the beauty.

Walking

Nice easy stroll along the perimeter of the lake. Beautiful view at any angle! Sad the canoe rentals were closed at this time of year but great time anyways. Make sure to get there early! We went on Oct. 5th (off season and on a Monday) and got there at 745 am (just before sunrise) and snagged one of the last 5 spots but the day before it was completely full with only overflow parking available. Also saw a black bear eating some berries on the side of the road on the drive out

It’s a easy walk, with the light rain it was a little slick in areas. Beautiful views!

WalkingGreat!

Lovely walk, lots of great places to take photos, peaceful and serene. We walked back to the big stream that runs into the lake, it was nice there, we could see the lake from another view. Easy, clear path no incline. We arrived at 6am the road was already closed, we thought as it was a weekday (a Friday) and later in the season, it might be easier to get to the parking lot, but no, I guess it still fills up by around 5am.

Beautiful in the evening for when the sun goes down. Much less people and we got time to ourselves at the end by the river rapids. Checked out the area for sunrise tomorrow.
