Mistaya Canyon is a beautiful area and lesser-visited gem along the Icefields Parkway in Banff. It is located about 5 km south of Saskatchewan Crossing. From the parking area, a short walk (~10 minutes, about 1 km each way) through the peaceful forest leads to a wooden bridge crossing a river from where the deep canyon is visible. Mistaya Canyon is a beautiful natural wonder with rushing water, rock formations and multiple waterfalls to see! It is surrounded by such gorgeous scenery of mountains and forests and is very picturesque – perfect for plenty of photo opportunities. You can cross the bridge and walk a little ways along the river to admire some different views of the canyon. The hike is downhill on the way to the bridge and uphill on the way back to the parking area, but it is totally manageable and not too strenuous at all. Mistaya Canyon is not as well known as other sights along the Icefields Parkway, so you will likely experience fewer people which adds to this area’s beauty.

We walked down to the canyon to stretch our legs on a long drive and enjoy the view. Really easy and walk - well worth they stop. The canyon is beautifully carved out and standing over it on the walking bridge is great! Line up another hike if you make the trip, this ones quick.

My hubby and I went today and arrived at about 9am. We were the only ones there. The path was quite slippery and muddy so we only hiked to the rocky part of the canyon. What a view. The rush of thr water is amazing! Be very careful if you decide to go on the rocks. As mentioned, quite slippery! The hike back to the parkinb lot is a little tough as it is all uphill but just have to pace yourself. Lots of mosquitos FYI so bug spray is definately needed.

Visited on 6/19/2020. I've been here several times. I was lucky to have the area (almost) to myself on my two visits during this trip. Go very early or very late to beat the crowds. Be very careful by the river...the water level was very high and the rocks can be slippery...one wrong step and you're gone! It's a short easy hike going down, but a little steep on the way back up. I saw 3 different grizzlies and one black bear all very near the parking area this weekend, so bring bear spray. The walk to the bridge is easy and family friendly, but beyond that it is too dangerous for children (and reckless adults).

It was beautifully sobering to experience the power of water through the canyon during spring run off! Visited late in the day and did not see anyone else!

Very enjoyable, quick little hike down into the canyon. Moderate elevation gain (on the way back only). Lots of spurs and trails into surrounding canyons. High traffic

Nice little hike waterfall. Bit of elevation down going and up on return, but shouldn’t deter you from going. Sat on rocks near the falls for 15 minutes or so at bottom.

Running water soothes me. And it can be found here. Cross the bridge, make your was found and around towards the water and have a seat and watch an listen. Listen to the water and ignore the people who are intent to get to the bridge take a pic and leave. Payback in the rocks, feel the power of the water, and isolate yourself. Worth an hour of your time. No skills needed here.

Nice canyon but definitely not a hidden gem anymore. Probably because of all the brochures calling it a hidden gem... Very crowded!

Really pretty, really easy. Slightly steep heading down but totally worth it at the end. We walked a bit alongside the water too. Plenty of people around.

great easy trail (although it is downhill at first - I wish it was reversed), very popular! but that's ok because you can walk down the river to a more private area to get some good photos and wont have lots of other people in your shot ;)

Nice and easy walk from the parking lot to the falls. Not what you call a hike, but the views in the end are beautiful. Good to go with kids!

This short hike was a great break from the car and the depth of the water’s cut into the rock was amazing.

This hike is short and simple. View at the canyon is mesmerizing. Sounds of water, view if the valley on one side and beauty of the canyon on the other side. Overall it’s a must do hike for a quick break after long drive.

A very short hike with beautiful falls! Hardly anyone in the trail. If you are traveling along Ice Fields Parkway definitely worth the stop.

One of my all time favourite spots. It's right off the highway. So many people just drive right by it and miss out on this absolute gem. I haven't been up there recently but I suspect the construction around the parking area is complete by now.
