Note: this trail closes for the winter season so please check here for more info: https://www.kneehillcounty.com/2272/Horseshoe-Canyon This is a great hike to a spectacular canyon, but if you follow the loop on the map, the west ascent is NOT easy. If you follow the loop counter-clockwise you have to do some steep climbing through muddy crevices to get back up to the parking lot elevation. The start of the trail has stairs and gravel paths and is excellent however.

Walking

Great trail just an hour out of Calgary. Good for a short visit to see something unique thats not a mountain or lake They do have stairs that lead down into the bottom of the canyon. which is the only challenge to the hike - 10-13 flights of stairs.

Super fun when we went exploring back in October. Honestly became very lost scooting around the place, but overall it was cool to check out :)

Nice fall hike in the canyon, I think we might have made our own path as the map was not correct.

Should have checked the GPS more frequently as we got off trail near the end and came out of the canyon at a field with no path. Otherwise the hike was great with spectacular views.

All Trails needs to update this walk, their is now a fully functioning compacted trail with good accessibility and stairs into the canyon. The trail listed on here is now part of a please keep out section for surrounding rejuvenation. If you park in the car park with the washrooms the trail will be off to the right now.

I followed the signs down into the canyon, down the steps and eventually found the trail that was the recording. The walk was quite enjoyable but got a bit lost once it was time to head back up. Just followed the general direction and climbed up at a spot that was working for me.

Great hike, but if you follow the loop on the map, the west ascent is NOT easy (moderate/difficult). Wonderful and easy hike for Sunday afternoon. We did our own loop starting with wooden and gravel path until the bottom, where the gravel path finish, then we created our own route climbing some hills and enjoying a nice view. We did it counter-clockwise finishing at the parking lot, where we had a quick picnic bite. Sunny and some windy conditions. Recommended to use boots as terrain is highly erosive. Washroom available. 10 Kms to Drumheller after the hike and return to Calgary.
