Hiking

Frozen lake is still half frozen, and very beautiful. This hike is an uneventful cross country ski trail for the first half. It gets steeper and narrower near the end, but not hard. Lots of wet, mucky spots and some snow up higher. Wildflowers are in bloom. Saw lots of evidence of bear activity (multiple piles of scat, lots of digging & overturned rocks, etc) We recorded more distance and elevation than AllTrails lists.

Alot of variables, its spring at the start of the trail and winter at the top, swampy and mucky and slushy snow towards the end, Frozen lake lives up to it name. It was cloudy with rain drops. just be careful doing this trail, and wear proper footwear and Gators are a Must.

Hiking

May 24, 2020. While the rest of Kananaskis is in spring, Elk Pass is still in winter. Going up the ski trail, the snow is shallow but not packed, so it’s cumbersome to walk on. Once you turn onto Frozen Lake Trail, it’s waist deep snow. The path is covered and there are no fresh tracks. Do not do this hike until later summer unless you have snowshoes (and GPS). The lake itself is beautiful. Small avalanches from Mt. Fox above were incredible to watch and listen to.

Cross Country Skiing

Such a nice trail! We parked at Boulton Creek, skied to Elk Pass trail and took the trail to the boundary. Nice steady incline before the boundary which made for a great workout and a hell of a lot of fun coming down. Saw fresh cougar tracks on our way back.

Cross Country Skiing

I just did this ski today (Jan 26th 2020) but I took elk pass to blueberry hill lookout and out. We parked at the Elk pass parking lot and stopped for lunch at the base of blueberry hill. There were fresh cougar prints on elk pass, so we stayed in a group. Great ski, took it nice and easy with our group and had lots of stops. 3hrs up, 45mins down! Snow was excellent. Make sure to bring lots of layers (obviously) because going down got chilly and going up was hot.

I liked this hike. Most of the elevation gain is at the last 2km. Lots of bear scat along the trail.

Frozen Lake is really beautiful. As others have said, the last 1.5 km is very steep, but its only for a short time, so its worth it.

Great trail! One must make a turn at the sign says Elk lakes following the main road It will take about an hour from here It will take some effort to get to the lake but your efforts will be rewarded by a wildflower blanket definitely worth it

Wonderful hike up to frozen lake, no technical difficulty just a little bit of effort once past the marsh area (just past the fox lake turnoff). No snow left, just a lot of mud and water, got our boots soaked in the marshes. We decided to go past frozen lake up Taiga Pass..... the view is spectacular, can see all the way to Lower Kananaskis lake. Absolute stunner. But there is no trail up to the pass or down the other side, and it’s a pure scramble, very steep, with difficult footholds and easy to slide to the lake below. If you attempt it, do not underestimate the difficulty - be ready for a long slow scary climb. Happy I did it, but this is one I won’t attempt again ;)

great hike and fairly easy until the last 1.7km. we went a day after rainfall and There were tons of bugs and we got stung a few times by beee despite strong repellants. In the end, Frozen lake has tons of fish, so bringing your fishing gear... it's a rewarding hike!

Beautiful trail! Last KM is a pretty tough vertical but well worth the climb to this pretty blue lake.

Fishing

It's a walk in the "park" until the last kilometer where you will not need an electrocardiogram to check your heart rate. Your shirt will be pulsating visibly after that stretch. Great fishing. You can bike up to the border with about 3 places I need to walk it. It's a tough ride now because a lot of soft spots, mulch, on the trail after the flood but it saves 1/2 hr on the way down which can be a bit monotonous walking.

Hiking

Tough hills at the beginning that level out, going through a marshy area. The head wall area is steep but doable, and the views are 100% worth it. About half the time going back down, and the lake is a great spot to stop for lunch!

Easy hike until you start to head up the ridge and then it gets steep in places...lots of snow at the top made life difficult...but the reward is more than worth it...loved it

Not much for signage but decent for an afternoon hike. Won’t take much in summer but a bit more difficult in winter.
