The hike on the Black Prince Interpretive Trail is a great family-friendly hike on the Smith-Dorrien. This route takes you to Warspite Lake on a good path and there are great views once at Warspite Lake. Please note that this trail does not go to Black Prince Lake. The start of the trail is at the signed trailhead, near the outhouses. From here, head out on an old logging road. After about 15 minutes cross a bridge over Smith Dorrien Creek and continue along the broad path. Soon it enters the forest and comes to a fork. At the fork you can go either way, the right-hand trail takes you on a walk with interpretive posts and most people go in this direction. In about an hour from leaving your car (faster if you aren’t hiking with little children) you reach Warspite Lake. This is a very pretty lake, and on calm, sunny days you will want to spend a while here, savouring the view of Black Prince Cirque high above and Mount Black Prince. The reflections in the lake can provide stunning photos, and you will find yourself snapping lots of pictures on a nice day.

WalkingGreat!

2021/01/23 Washrooms open and available at parking lot! Wasn’t even busy for a Saturday morning/afternoon. I really loved this trail! I wanted to find a “hike” that everyone in my family could enjoy together, grandmother, father, sister, and myself, who are all at different comfort levels, fitness levels etc. My grandmother found the first 200m steep, but that’s honestly where all the elevation is, which a little bit passed the bridge opening(turn left at bridge). For being an easy trail, one which we saw all different sizes of very cute dogs on, the views and trail were wonderful. The whole trail is packed down, and not slippery at all. The lake was gorgeous. And I’d argue this trail is at it’s best in the winter. We only got a bit confused near the end of the trail where the final fork looked as though both trails lead to the same place, if you have a large increasing elevation trail after you have passed the second bridge you went right instead of left, turn back around and head left. Every other path we stuck to the right though. Saw back country skiers, snowshoers, families, dogs, everyone enjoyed this trail with lots of respect towards social distancing. I definitely recommend. Everything is flat after that first uphill portion. We were winter socks, thick ankle socks, thing gloves with thick gloves on top, snow pants and buffs and we felt perfect when the temp was -8 to -16. No microspikes or any of that needed. This is definitely just a walk not a hike.

Lovely day to be out and about. Fair number of people but everyone respectful. Incline at the start gets the blood pumping for sure. Note that if standing around the edge of the lake to watch for skiers coming down. Will definitely come back here!

Good. Short easy 90min hike. No need for spikes or hiking poles. Walking path does split up a few times so hope you got this map downloaded to make life easier (I assume all path goes the same place) Path is packed snow and the scenery is of mostly untouched and thick blanket of snow. Careful not to go past the lake as there is presently a higher risk of avalanche.

The trail is a little bit steep the first part of it but the rest was smooth sailing. Bring snowshoes to walk around/across the lake. Didn’t take very long to get to the lake, 1.5 hrs and only an hour to get back. Stunning views, a must see.

Beautiful view at the top! Bit of an uphill climb to start. Easy trail hard packed. Snow shoes not required except at the top if you want to walk across the lake.

Well groomed. Could use snowshoes when around the lake. We hiked the trail but shared the path with a few back country skiers. Not too busy

Great little trip up to the lake. Spectacular views of Black Prince Mountain. There has to be 3-4 ft of snow up there. Real winter wonderland! Trail was a little busy but it was a Sunday.

Great day out. We don't own snowshoes so just had our snowboots (ice cleats on hand but not needed). Trail was mostly packed although some spots are deep. Parking was packed by 11am.

Hiked this on Sat Jan 9th. Super easy! Lots of people had snow shoes but we did it in normal hiking boots. Views are beautiful as you get closer to the lake. Trail is very packed down. Wasn’t too busy and we started at 11am.

Beautiful quick hike with a bit of a climb right at the beginning. Lots of snow. Don’t need snowshoes unless you want to track through the virgin snow on the lake.

Tons of great snowshoe snow currently! Could do the trail with spikes but definitely recommend snowshoes once you hit the lake! Super easy (with a bit of a climb at the beginning) it’s a short one but definitely worth the trek for the views at the end!

Great winter trail. We arrived around lunch and there were not too many people around. Trail was packed down and we didn’t need to use our crampons. There were a few people snowshoeing the trail, but actually most were skiing down the trail. Great views at the top of the cirque.
