Please note: As of July 06, 2020, users have reported that the Upper trail past the falls is still CLOSED. This hike starts off on the Waterton Lakeshore trail, which ends up in Goat Haunt, Montana.  As a footnote, in the summer months there are semi-weekly International Peace Park interpreted hikes, which are lead by both a Waterton Park and Glacier National Park ranger. These outings are extremely entertaining and informative, ending off with a boat cruise back to Waterton. After about 1.5 km (1 mile), the Bertha Lakes trail veers sharply north away from the Lakeshore trail. The trail becomes quite steep, specifically after the bridge that crosses Bertha Falls. The foliage is quite dense, and the trail switchbacks its way upward. Occasionally you can get a glimpse of Vimy Peak and Upper Waterton Lake. The trail ends at Bertha Lake, which is more scenic than most lakes in the region. A 4.6 km circuit of the lake is well worth the effort.

HikingGreat!

Amazing hike, quite the grind up, but definitely worth it. Walk around the lake at the top a bit to see the red rock beaches! Signs say there’s a bear in the area but we had no issues

Nature tripsBridge outGreat!

Nice moderate/hard hike. It was easy getting to the falls, after that it’s more of a steady incline the rest of the way. Beautiful lake surrounded by mountains. There was a black bear after the falls.

I had no idea what i was in for but it was worth it. Amazing views the entire way and it changes with the elevation. Pretty difficult climb with camping gear. The lake is stunning, clear, great spots to sit on and swim.

HikingGreat!No shade

great trail with lots of views. not a lot of shade until you get closer to the lake. we started at 8am and there was almost no one on the trail so that was nice but by 10am the trail was fairly busy.

HikingBridge out

Started the hike at 9 am and only ran into a few people on the way up. the trail around the lake had lots of fallen trees but easy to get around. we came across a Marmot family at the end of the lake and saw a few bighorn sheep in the cliffs. Very busy after the falls. would do again during the week to avoid the crowds.

HikingBridge outBugsGreat!

Loved it! Started at 11am, got up to the lake in 1 hr. 45 mins. First section to lower falls is very exposed because of the burn, but a steady incline, not too steep. There were quite a few people, but nothing terrible and most of these stopped at the falls. Took the horse trail off to the right before the lower falls (as the bridge is out), although the water may be low enough to cross and not use the horse trail if you choose to. After the falls, you get steep switchbacks, but the view at the end is worth it. The burn didn’t hit the lake, so it’s still very lush and green up there. The trail around the lake is very overgrown but it’s fun to get to the different views. There are plenty of shorelines along the lake to stop and eat or swim. Just be aware that the flies are super bad and aggressive, and they really don’t care about any amount of bug spray you put on. We saw a marmot at the rocky outcropping on the right side of the lake, otherwise not many birds or wildlife other than chipmunks. In all, well worth the effort, it’s a beautiful lake, just remember to bring lots of water, snacks and sunscreen!

Completed July 6th, 2020. Absolutely perfect day to hike this trail! The upper trail to the lake is closed, but you can use the horse trail just before! You can walk around Bertha Lake which is another 4km I believe (could be wrong). I didn’t have time to go around, but would like to go back to do so! Beautiful all around!

HikingGreat!

I did this hike 2 years ago and it was a great trail! I would say it is more of a moderate hike compared to other hard trails but still a workout! Beautiful views along the way but it can be a busy trail depending on the time you go.

the bridge over the water fall is broken. the water level was too high to pass. so you can't get to the actual trail that leads to the lake. we tried on June 9.

Hiking

An Awesome hike, weather was perfect, No Bugs!!. After a 4km hike, you'll be amaze of the stunning view, stop for picture taking and snacks, then as you go further, you'll pass the lower falls , next switchbacks then upper falls. There were rooted path, just felt sad passing by the burnt trees from the forest fire. But the overlooking view compensates it. Upon reaching the Lake , we took a dip, water was so cold, overall well worth the climb!!! Parking was full. Trail was steady with hikers and were friendly . Saw deer when descending, no bear sightings.

the trail top the lake was 4 stars. the trail around the lake was 5 stars. if you ho to the lake, make sure you walk around the lake to the right. it's a long lake with a lot of beautiful scenery on the back side. it took us 1.5 hours to get to the lake. i didn't time how long around. it was at least 1-1.5 hours.
