The Flemish nature reserve "De Zwinduinen en-polders" is located on the edge of Knokke Zoute and runs further into the Netherlands. The Zwinduinen en-polders is a 222-hectare dune, forest and meadow area that extends between the Knokke neighborhood “Het Zoute” and the actual Zwin. Before this area was protected in 2003 as a Flemish nature reserve, it was used for a variety of purposes. In the last century, roads, bunkers, a jumping area, an airport, a golf course, hunting groves, etc. were built there. It is therefore high time to put nature back in the first place and to tackle the damage sustained. The aim of the ZENO (Zwinduinen Ecological Nature Development) project was to restore damaged nature in the dunes and the transition between dunes and polders. When implementing the management plan, the recreational value of the area was also not overlooked, and all paths were replaced in the course of 2009 and 2010. This walk guides you through the lovely area on the edge of Het Zoute where you walk a part through the chic residential neighborhoods along small paths to pick up a small strip of coast and then dive back into the nature of the Zwin area with its polders behind. A 4 star route!
