Getting There

About 12km of the Yarra River meander through Yarra Bend Park, located just 4km northeast of the CBD on Wurundjeri land, the reserve has Melbourne’s largest natural bushland still in-tact. The Yarra River is elemental to the identity of Wurundjeri people of Melbourne/Naarm who are the traditional owners of the land where the Yarra River runs. The Yarra River was, and continues to be, a serene path for Dreaming, a life source for healthy communities, and a meeting place for all. If you're after a place to escape the hustle and bustle of the city, this trail is for you. Along the banks of the Yarra you can fully immerse in nature with native bushland and wildlife including but certainly not limited to rainbow lorikeets, red-rumped parrots and yellow-tailed black cockatoos, water rats and brush-tail and ringtail possums. There are also some great viewing areas for the dusk migrations of flying fox populations. Highlights of this loop trail include Galatea Point, the Deep Rock swimming club, and of course the river red gum that shades the banks of the water.

There are several public toilets, drinking fountains, seating benches and picnic areas at the trailhead and along the trail - with the most facilities about halfway when you reach Studley Park Boathouse (where there is also a cafe).

There are several access points for commencing this loop, the trailhead starts at the northern point at Fairfield Boathouse, which has lots of parking but can also get quite busy. Another popular starting point with a large parking area is from the Studley Park Boathouse.

Running

Good for trail running. Some parts are a bit sketchy so watch your footing. A part of the trail after River Retreat Rd is closed so you may need to find an alternate route. The bat colony is incredible.

Great trail, definitely dog friendly with a few off lead parts - went in the evening just as the flying foxes were waking up

We found the trail provided a good variety of terrain. The path was narrow at times and inadequate space for two way traffic. The trail is not really suitable for bikes in my opinion, however putting up with a few awkward moments did not take away from the surprising sights of bats and a lounging lizard that were viewed along the way. A few more rustic seats sensitively placed would have been good however keeping it natural is also great! Love to sit by the river and meditate.

The section south of the flying foxes is shut because of landslides so you have to divert up to Yarra Blvd for a section. It’s not as peaceful as a countryside hike as there is always the slight hum of cars in the background. But great and surprising for somewhere so close to home.

Fun little adventure with all variety’s of scenery, animal life and trails. The bat colony is amazing, something out of National Geographic. Definitely worth checking out and make sure you have grip on your boots, it’s muddy out there!
