Hanging Rock is a 1.2 mile moderately trafficked out and back trail located near Woodend, Victoria, Australia that features beautiful wild flowers and is rated as moderate. The trail is primarily used for hiking, walking, and nature trips and is accessible year-round.
While Hanging Rock has been widely associated with the fictional novel 'Picnic at Hanging Rock', it is more important to acknowledge the traditional owners of Hanging Rock and this site’s rich and tragic Indigenous history, to concede that Joan Lindsay’s renowned novel reiterated a history of settler fiction and cultural forgetting of violent dispossession being unrecognised. When visiting this culturally sensitive site, be respectful in your presence and use this as an opportunity for reflection, remembering and learning. Hanging Rock is located on the boundary of three Aboriginal groups, the Wurundjeri, Taungurong and Dja Dja Wurrung. The area was place for meeting and for ceremonies for more than 26,000 years, before colonisers forcibly removed them from their lands. These traditional owners are the primary guardians and knowledge holders of Aboriginal cultural heritage for the site, and any effort to revive Aboriginal presence, names or cultural interpretation at Hanging Rock must be led by and centre their views.
Extremely crowded, unfortunately I wouldn’t do it again. No socially conscious people anywhere to be seen. Dangerous, overcrowding on rocks and a lack of self awareness about appropriate behaviour in areas like this.
Saw some kangaroos at the base. Walk up to the summit is stunning with rock formations and quirky trees.
Great walk to the summit. You can climb the rocks where ever you want and find the best spot for yourself for a break. Kids love it!
great scenery. A little bit of adventure. good wildlife with wrens, roos and A wallaby. Dogs are not allowed on the walk but are allowed on lead around car park.
A gorgeous spot. Great for kids with the small challenge to walk up. When you get to the top there’s lots of exploring to do. The information centre at the bottom is very creative and has lots of information. There are plenty of picnic spots there before or after the hike. Great views and something for everyone on this short walk. Extremely busy though so if it’s serenity and quiet you want, then this is not the hike for you.
1800m there and back, some rock climbing, some hiking, some casual walking. At some points gets quite steep but a reasonably quick, easy climb with beautiful views at the top. This trail is not suitable for dogs.
