Best hike I’ve ever done. 17kms, 1500 metres gained in altitude, and 9 hours return. Pretty easy fire trail that turns into track, which turns into an almost continuous scramble for the next 2 hours or so. From that point on, it’s incredibly sketchy, very exposed, and plenty of vertical climbing ahead. Definitely not for those who are scared of heights or with poor upper busy strength, but it makes it easier knowing you don’t go back the same way. I think I counted maybe 5 or 6 false summits before finally reaching the end. The view was incredible. The descent down South Ridge (or Peasant’s Ridge as it’s also called) was very straight forward. Hardest part was the rock face on the other side of the summit, but it was only hard because it was raining. In dry weather it would be no problem. Once you reach the fire trail, it’s several ks of pretty boring walking but worth it overall. I’d sure as hell not want to descend the SE Ridge haha. Best hike I’ve ever done, and my body is paying for it todayN

Went up South East ridge and down Peasants, more of a hike than a climb with some challenging climbing elements near the top on the South East Ridge. Good day out!

Mt Barney offers some spectacular views of the scenic rim and main range. One of the alternative starter trails to the South-East Ridge is closed due to fire damage. As always, be prepared, keep to the track and take sufficient water.

Completed in 6hrs 17min the whole track. Started anticlockwise on the experienced climber track. Pouring rain the whole time so no view, just cold wind-chill in the wet. Not too difficult just very long

Superb hike. Up and down solo in around 4.5hrs total. Some daunting sections but breathtaking views. Be wary that conditions can change extremely quickly, you would definitely not want to go up or down in the wet. Be smart, take a buddy with you, lots of water and snacks and conserve your phone battery. If there’s even a chance of rain you should pack for the worst.
