Was so so windy, which exacerbated my fear of heights. We didn't go quite as far as planned but will be back on a less windy day. Still felt a great sense of achievement with some basic rock climbing/scrambling and tested the fear of heights as far as I dared in strong winds. Will definitely return soon- the views were phenomenal so looking forward to going higher /further.

The walk itself is stunning with great views and an easy track to follow up until the signpost heading up to Ruined Castle. The same is the case at Mount Solitary. The path up to each is well trodden but there are a number of routes you can take for the last few KM. There is a bit of scrambling involved but that adds to the fun of it. I recommend starting at Echo Point and joining the Federal Pass from there (you need to find the entrance from the road) and when you come back go up the golden stairs and either catch a ride from the car park or walk the 3km into town. I did the former and it took me 6 hours all the way around. The walk is great and the views are breathtaking. Defo a highlight of the Blue Mountians

The hike to Mt Solitary was pretty solid. Up until the fork in the road that pointed to either the ruined castle or the campground, the trail was easy to follow. As you walk to ruined castle the trail sort of slowly disappears but a trained eye can easily see it. From the campground the hike to the bottom of Mt Solitary was a breeze. Climbing it took a bit of finagling and skill. Be cautious. The trail disappears on the climb but sometimes you'll find that it starts back up again behind the rocks. You could easily hike to Mt Solitary and back in one day if you wanted or just keep going to the next campsite at Kedumba river.

first time hiker with no experience, myself and my sister took on this track the golden stairs are fine going down takes about 40 minutes going at a slow and steady pace, the walk to the bottom on the ruined castle is beautiful with birds singing and the breeze was great although the 600m of stairs at the bottom of ruined castle is a killer but the view is great if you can bring yourself to climb to the top of the rock golden stairs on the way back where a struggle

Great out and back, go up Mt Solitary first and see if you have time to do Ruined Castle before taking on the Golden Staircase. Road to the carpark is fine for most 2WDs, many were parked there. Maybe be cautious after rain taking a 2WD down.

Great walk, climbing Mt Solitary is one of my favourite day walks! However, the ratings and difficulty is scewed. While it's a pleasant walk, the walks in Blackheath are far more stunning. I really don't think it's genuinely a hard grade trail, it seems this is mostly to discourage ill prepared tourists coming from scenic world. If this walk is a hard grade, how do we rate K2K, cradle mountain, larapinta, etc?

Golden Staircase to Ruined Castle. 3 hours round trip including sitting at the top of Ruined Castle for a few minutes to snack & enjoy the view. The hardest part is the up/down at Golden Staircase & at Ruined Castle. Suitable for older kids. Great walk, will do it again.

Excellent accessible walk to a 360° viewpoint at ruined castle. A great hike to see the Katoomba cliffs from the other side.

Great walk. Stairs on the way back can be a bit of a killer. Keep going past ruined castle for amazing views up Mt. Solitary.

The perfect balance between an intense but short track. The view from ruined castle if you can reach the top rock is outstanding!!!

Headed down from the car park at golden stairs. Possible to get there in a 2WD but parts of the unsealed road were a bit sketchy in the car. Skipped Ruined Castle and headed straight up Mt Solitary. Steady gradient at the base to get the legs going and then steepens with some rock scrambling. Keep an eye on the trodden trail as it weaves around rocky outcrops and watch for loose rocks. Reached about 3/4 along the mountain before returning to about half way to camp for the night near the cliff top. Took 3.5hrs with a 12kg pack. This was after a 5hour morning hike into the gully at Blackheath. Took 3 hours to return to the car. Golden stairs at the end is 800m long and the sign at the bottom says 45mins. Challenge accepted. Took 22mins but it was a heart and thigh burner. Legs were cooked.

Leave your car at the top of Glenraphel drive and walk down the dirt road (approx 2ks to the Golden Stairs). The dirt road is fine if you have a 4wd, but if you have a car, it's probably better to leave it as the road is not that well maintained. The walk itself is worth it. The views from the top of the ruined castle (big rock formation) is awesome. apart from the Golden Stairs, the walk is easy. But going down and up the GS is tough going (only 800m, but very steep). 1hr 40m each way.

Fantastic walk with amazing views. We got the scenic railway into the valley and walked to the ruins. A bit of a scramble across the landslide section of bout 500m but other than that it’s a pretty easy walk. We had our 13 year old plus I have average fitness at the moment but did it comfortably. It’s about 2hrs each way. Got the sky rail back up the hill. Also a small hill climb of approx 600m to the ruins but take ur time and it’s pretty easy. Beautiful country. Take some water, snacks & a coffee in a flask and u’ll love it. Be careful not to miss the track off the boardwalk at scenic world. After you get off the train and just past a few displays the trail is off to the right.

Set out around 8am from the top of the Golden Stairs and arrived at the Castle around 945am. Coming down is mostly easy and the middle section through the forest is nice and mostly flat with a slight uphill effort to get to the castle. Scramble to the top is rather easy when you find the right section to climb. The hardest part was the climb back up the Stairs at the end. I was carrying a 12kg pack for training but is rather hard regardless. Take some rests on the way back up and you will get there fine but you will have some tired legs. Took us 3.5 -4 hours round trip. View on top of ruins was amazing.

Started around 2:30pm in the summer time. Got to see the amazing changes in the sky’s colour. The top of the Ruined Castle made for a scenic little picnic spot for our sandwich craving group. Plenty of landmarks to frame pictures if you get creative!

Did this hike March 19, 2018. Excellent full day hike. Well marked. I started from the Golden Stairs and worked my way to the Ruined Castle and Mount. Solitary. I would say the hike out there was more moderate than the listed difficult with only a few difficult sections (i.e. scrambling rocks to get to top of Mount Solitary and Ruined Castle for the view points). Started bright and early and got to Mount Solitary by half day to beat the heat. Brings lots of water. Returned same route but continued on along the Federal Pass which more difficult, ending at Scenic World (took cable car back up at the end of the day)

A great hike in the Blue Mountains! We climbed the ruined castle and mount solitary, both had with awesome views. There's a bit of scrambling to get to the top of Mount Solitary, which was fun. There's lots of good camping on the way to mount solitary or on top.

The trail from Golden Stairs (or Scenic Railway) is nice, lyrebirds are very common. The 360 degree view atop the Ruined Castle is utterly magnificent

amazing views

Challenging but beautiful. The way down was quite tranquil and easy but the way back up was another story. A lot of stops and breathers. Amazing views the entire way and was breathtakingly beautiful.

Between the stairs and the rock formation the track is quite flat. The views from atop Ruined Castle are something truly special. Watch out as there's no track to the top, you have to scale the rocks.
