Mount Kosciuszko Summit via Thredbo is a 12.1 mile moderately trafficked out and back trail located near Thredbo, New South Wales, Australia that features a river and is rated as difficult. The trail is primarily used for hiking, walking, and nature trips and is best used from November until April.
Fees in Kosciuszko National Park depend on the time of year and area of the park, information can be found here www.nationalparks.nsw.gov.au/visit-a-park/parks/kosciuszko-national-park/visitor-info Great short hike to the top of Mount Kosciuszko - Australia's highest point. The last 800 metres can be quite difficult depending on the time of year and weather conditions – in the winter the wind chill factor and snow can make this hike significantly harder. However, it comes highly recommended to do this hike in early winter for the beauty in the landscape as it transitions to snow. From the summit at 2,228m take in the spectacular views of the Australian Alps and the expansive Kosciuszko National Park. You can take the Kosciuszko express chairlift ride from Thredbo to Eagles Nest for a shorter route in the summer which can be found here – www.alltrails.com/trail/australia/new-south-wales/eagles-nest-to-kosciusko-summit
went on a day when it was snowing up until the eagle nest chairlift, everything past that to the summit was 35-50km winds and pretty unsafe to do unless well prepared, will definitely be back to complete another time on a nicer weather day
Track consists of two main parts: Merrits nature walk and Kosciuszko summit walk. Merrits is a relatively tough 3.5 km long trail, climbing 560 m, consisting of steep and uneven stairs. The track intercepts with other walking and bike trails. Make sure you go left after you cross the bridge on the road near the start, signage not great. Toilets and some shelter at the top in Eagles nest cafe. From here it is easy going along a steel board walk, which I was not a fan of because it detracted from the naturalness of the surroundings. You will find the path much more congested from here as most will have taken the chairlift. Very windy and cold when we went, but had wonderful views of the harsh bare landscape. There is another toilet at Rawson pass about 1 km from the summit.
Great but tough hike. Started at Merrits nature track near the chair lift . 17kg packs for overnight stay. Very tough. Need to be fit if carrying this type of weight.Started at 2pm. Settled at eagles nest. -3 degree night. Walked to kosci in the morn. Fun hike. If your going to do an overnight stay make sure ur prepared for the elements. Cold and Windy at the top. Enjoyable hike
A must see for all. Take the chair lift if you want to save yourself 3hrs. Beautiful country.
Spectacular! Not a hard walk. Steady climb with stairs to start but opens up to undulating trail. Enjoyed the quiet of initial walk directly from the village. Becomes a little busier once you reach the chairlift and mostly boardwalk from this point. Reached the summit earlier than I expected so extended walk down around Seaman’s Hut, stopped for lunch and headed back down. Was a gorgeous day but still cool and windy up top. Highly recommend. Trail well maintained and easy to follow from village to summit and return.
We did this hike starting at Thredbo, along the Merrits Nature trail, it’s a tough 4km climb up to the Chairlifts. It’s a 13km return walk mostly along a metal boardwalk back ( To Summit Mt Kosciuszko) to chairlift. We packed for all weather, we used everything we packed. Gloves, polytech Buff, material buff,Gortex Jacket, Poncho rain cover, Merino long sleeve top, Long pants. All weather was experienced. Sun, wind, Heavy rain, thunderstorms & hail. Loved it! As we were dry and warm
Stunning walk. Hardest part is the first few kms from Thredbo Village to top of the chairlift, after that a 13km return to the summit on a metal boardwalk at an easy, steady incline. 4:14 hours plus lunchstop. Most could do this walk and appreciate its rewarding views by opting to use the chairlift. But if you are fit, go the whole hog!
Not an easy walk from the chairlift with 100km/hr winds!! Pleasant walk! Downhill down Merrits only took an hour..
Great trail, walked from Snow Gum chair lift thru the snow gums, they were amazing. Wind became too strong with 2.5km to go and had to turn back. But we did get lots of snow, not bad for the end of October.
