Federation and Killalea Lagoon Walk is a 2.6 mile loop trail located near Wollongong, New South Wales, Australia that features a lake and is good for all skill levels. The trail is primarily used for hiking, walking, trail running, and bird watching.
I did a loop starting at the kiosk, I tried to cut to the western boundary but the park is so degraded by weeds especially lantana and a host of other thorny characters that I was unable to pass some paths. I made it down the western side of the Minnamurra arm down to the lagoon. The path disappeared toward the end and I had to track through dense thorny asparagus week. Definitely boot and long leggings needed. I timed the beach walk for low tide hoping to make the circuit along the rock shelf. Unfortunately, there was a large swell running so I decided to track up from the rock shelf through one of the numerous unmarked tracks back on to the foot path at the top. After traversing Killalea beach I did the lagoon loop. The beach and rock shelf part of the walk is totally mesmerising and really excellent vistas but the park part is in very poor shape because of the total domination of noxious weeds. In terms of exertion, the beaches are easy walks, on the rocks one needs to be agile and fully aware of the surf conditions and off track one needs full length pants and boots. I believe one can travers the full length of the eastern side at low tide low surf conditions with lots of big rock scrambling but I didn’t mange to do it as one can see.
Easy trail. The climb up the stairs from the beach will get your heart pumping. View from the top looking down to The Farm beach is beautiful.
An easy walk around Killalea Lagoon with bird life, mostly following a marked track and along the beach.
