Bungonia Gorge Green and Red Track is a 2.7 mile moderately trafficked loop trail located near Bungonia, New South Wales, Australia that features a river and is rated as moderate. The trail is primarily used for hiking, walking, and nature trips.
Challenging but very rewarding with spectacular scenery. The descent at the start and the ascent at the end are both very steep and will take some effort, especially in hot weather. The boulder section can be hard to navigate as there are multiple possible routes. The whole loop took us about six hours to complete.
This is a hard but rewarding hike! We travelled anti-clockwise and found the decent easy, the path is obviously worn, although there are little markers and you may walk for several km without seeing the next one. Pack a PLB as there is no reception and download the map. A trowel wouldn't go astray as it is a long day out. You may need to do some river crossing so I would also recommend taking a small hand towel and a spare pair of socks. It is so much fun scrambling over the boulders, lots a of teamwork needed here and sometimes you may have to double back but there is no right through. Take as many breaks as needed and stay safe!
Red track was very challenging but worth it. I preferred doing it clockwise because the climb back up was steep but gradually while anti-clockwise it will be alot steeper and straight up. Do not attempt red track if you are not confident or experience enough to tackle the boulder part of this track. They are huge and it's a scramble to get through. A good grip shoes is a must as condtion are rocky from start to finish. Water is very important at least 3ltr. Make sure you register before you start any tracks as there is no reception in the area unless you have PLB with you in case of an emergency.
Did it clockwise. Great view and plant life going down and the gorge and rock hopping kept things interesting. Stopped for lunch by some running water. Ate too much which absolutely did NOT help hiking back up the gorge in the heat. Didn’t miss much going back up as it was all bush. And I wasn’t in the mood to enjoy it, so definitely went the right way. Great hike. Lots to see.
Amazing, but arduous especially if done backwards like I (accidentally) did. Also was wet & sprinkling which was a bad idea- definitely slipped a few times but overall a really fun and cool hike !!
Great hike. We did the trail anti-clockwise and camped overnight. Took about 1.5 hours to get to the campsite. Had lot's of fun in the pools. Sonny who joined us on part of our hike, we would love to hike again with you if your keen. Comment here? Hope you made it up the top in good time.....was pretty brutal on the way out :)
Amazing hike - the gorge is full of massive boulders you have to traverse, and swimming down there is idyllic. Very very steep in and out. We did it with 5 kids age 12-16, in 6.5 hours with lunch and multiple swimming stops.
An exciting trail with varied terrain. The boulder hopping through the slot canyon was my favourite because there is no one way of doing it. It's a find your own adventure kind of day. Would recommend doing the track anti-clockwise and to bring plenty of water and a walking pole for the first descent as the shale is very loose and slippery on the steep slope. The uphill is brutal in the heat so start early. Took us 4hrs car to car including lunch and swimming breaks (bring your swimmers for the gorgeous swimming holes).
Pretty well marked at the beginning. You'll see red markers at every corner, on trees and boulders marking the switchbacks. Keep a map handy though (Phone GPS works just fine), otherwise even despite the markers there is a high probability of going off the track. It is a very steep decline from the beginning, with loose rock; very slippery if you haven't got trail shoes with good lugs. Take a lot of water with you because if the climb back up is as steep, your throat will get dry fast. We had to stop and turn back when we reached the beginning of the dense rainforest area because we ran out of daylight. Would want to do this on another day.
Great Hike. We did it anti clock wise and worked perfectly. You can get lost through the boulders but just keep heading towards the gorge and you should be sweet.
An absolutely fabulous hike/scramble! I’d highly recommend using a GPS as there are no markers along the bottom of the gorge. My two girls aged 9 & 12 loved it but it’s certainly pushing even the fittest and most confident of hikers due to the elevations and boulder climbing.
