Hikers hoping to get a perfect view of Cerro Torre should set off for Laguna Torre, a glacial lake at the foot of the mountain. The lake is a reasonable turn-around point for a day hike out of El Chaltén, and is reached via an interesting, but not overly taxing, trail. The trailhead on Calle Riquelme is marked with a sign, and, after leaving town, the path closely follows the Río Fitz Roy valley. At the end of the trail, you will have to ascend a small moraine and some sand dunes, but it is the view of Cerro Torre, rather than the climb, that is likely to take your breath away.

I agree that this hike is a 2 or 3 compared to the others in the area, but if the weather is not cooperative, it’s not a bad option. Patagonia hikes are notoriously weather-dependent, and most of this hike is through a valley protected from wind. However, the winds at the lake were some of the strongest I’ve ever experienced...50-60mph. We wired to walk around the lake, but we were literally blown off the trail.

I rate this a 2 in comparison to the other two hikes in the area. The Trail was mostly bland, and the view at the end is pretty cool, but way better if you go to a different angle like on the other hikes. Also the lake is an ugly muddy brown, not brilliant blue like the other lakes. Be sure you don’t stop at the lake but go all the way around it for a better view of the glacier.

Imperdible.

Pouring Rain.
That means have the correct clothing (unlike some I passed).
Very windy, cold, a perfect hiking day.
I was surprised how many people were out there.

Dedicated trail workers / volunteers tending the trail.

Muchas gracias!

Do the future a favor and stay on the marked trail. Do not digress to the side trails. Especially on the El Chalten side.

Lovely hike with great variety of scenery and amazing view at end. We started at 2 pm and finished easily before sunset but were lucky to have had wonderful weather. Mostly very easy walking.

A beautiful trail that provides nice views of Cerro Torre. The hike is not as great as the Laguna de los Tres hike, but it is still very much worth hiking. Here is my full trip report with pictures, maps, and other info! https://backpackersreview.wordpress.com/trip-reports/los-glaciares-national-park/

It is trail with lots of veriety. Open fields, forrest, vista’s, fynbos, and a Great vista at the turning point, weather permits. I didn’t have Such luck as the weather can be very unpredictable turning from sunny, strong wind and 24C into 15 degrees and a downpoor with windforce 9/10 plus gusts upto 11. Come prepared!

Was the first time for me being that close to a Glacier for me and it was awesome! Fairly crowded trail but worth the view. Able to access right from the town of El Chalten.

I would consider this a moderate hike. Beautiful views, especially at the bottom of the valley (around 5km) if the torres are not visible.

To get to the actual lagoon, this is a moderate hike. I thought Laguna de Los Tres was way harder than this one. Phenomenal views all the way through, and the most peaceful, humble glaciers sit at the end if the time of the year offers it. I didn't get to see the spiky mountain peaks because of the clouds, but it was worth it anyway.

This is a great hike. I consider it moderate, not hard, unless you have a guide to take you across the river to the glacier.
