The views are amazing, the trail is in perfect condition and even though it says hard only the last hour of the hike justifies this label. Still very doable. We did it on a sunny Sunday after a period of bad weather which resulted into this being the most crowded hike ever (queuing to go down etc..), hence the 4 and not 5 stars.

From the parking lot to the vista at the lake, we recorded 14.2 miles. The first 9 km is not that bad, the last 1 km is a serious grinder with ~1200 ft of elevation gain. Nice that much of the trail is shaded and you have glorious views of the mountains almost all the way up.

Spectacular hike. Left at 0600 to make it before the rains came in. Little clouds by 0830 when up top. Snow flurries and rain when leaving. Back to town before noon. Would definitely recommend on slightly cloudy days.

Awesome hike. Make sure you bring some extra layers. A rain shell saved our lives when it suddenly started blowing crazy wind and rain. Do the detour to Mirador Fitz Roy (the loop near Laguna Capri) and climb up the little hill next to the sign with the mountain names. Gives you a great view. For water you can refill in the streams, too. One water container is likely all you need. Maybe have 2 just incase. Once at the top (and you’ve stopped huffing and puffing), go down to the laguna and stick to the trail on the south side of it. You’ll hit a sign that warns you about lack of trails, make a left and go to the edge to see another glacial lake.

Amazing. Last km is steep uphill but very manageable and worth it.

One of the most beautiful hikes I've done. Was lucky to have great weather with frequent clear skies over the course of the day. Would highly recommend using trekking poles coming down. A lot of the rocks had ice on them which made going down right after sunrise really dangerous.

Easy until the last mile, then hard but not killer. When you get to the top you want to them go to the easy peak to the west, great but different views. Go early. Best to van out to Hotel Pilar to ascend and then return by this route into town.

A fantastic hike! Great views of Fitz Roy most of the way, especially at the "Miradors" along the way. The last kilometer of the trail is very difficult as it is steep, rocky, narrow, and windy with over a 1000 foot vertical rise. As others have noted, the steep part is doable, but just not much fun. It was so windy at the top that everyone was hiding behind rocks for cover and only popped up quickly for the occasional photo of the spectacular site. We started at 7:30 at the parking lot and avoided the crowds going up. However, going down the steep stretch was unpleasant due to the crowds. After the steep stretch down, we made a side trip to the Piedras Glacier. It was longer than we expected, but a very pretty glacier. With the side trip, our total round trip was about 18 miles. Fitz Roy is a stunning, spectacular peak, so this is definitely the best hike to do in El Chalten in clear weather.

This is a great moderate trail to do in El Chalten. Many reviews say it is challenging, but ultimately depends on your experience. We trail run in the Canadian Rockies on more challenging terrain so would not consider this hard. The biggest challenge was the fact that it was quite busy, full of people with limited gear and experience. The park staff say it takes 8 hours but we did it in about 4.5 hours in the peak time of the afternoon.

This is at the same time one of the most amazingly beautiful hikes in this planet and yet a tough and physically demanding one. Do not underestimate it.

This trail has the best views I've ever seen in my life. Period. The first 2 miles and the last mile to the summit are HARD. I'm fit but mostly an amateur hiker and I struggled. But there were children and grandparents on the trail with me, so it's certainly doable, just be prepared.

Awesome trail - well maintained and well marked, especially for a free national park. Viewpoints on the way are great but nothing beats the view at the end after a challenging final ascent! Start earlier to beat the crowds.

Long but our 11 year old enjoyed it. The final 1km zigzag “sky stair” is not that hard, but: it’s literally a river with strong stream flowing down and loose rocks. Wear hiking shoes. Varied terrain and great views, even if the main peak never made out of the clouds for us. There were snow patches by the lake (off trail) that one can slide down if you know what you are doing.

Got on the trail early (6:00am) to avoid the crowds, which we hit on our descent. After some initial uphill the trail levels and is pretty flat offering nice views (weather permitting) of Fitz Roy. The last mile is a pretty steep uphill which can be challenging for some. The summit has great views but also high winds and hail when we were there. We stuck around for about an hour because the always changing conditions allowed most of Fitz Roy to quickly appear and then disappear again. A great hike and special place. 12/26/19

12/12/19 - 13.6~ miles and 7.5 hours with an awestruck hour at the top. My favorite trek to date - as good as hiking can be. We had perfect weather and very little traffic as we shoved off around 5:30a. Be sure to cruise around the top once you summit the final ridge to see Sucia and other incomprehensible viewpoints. Heavy traffic on our return to the car, but it was of no matter.

Easy until the final kilometer. Then it’s steep and covered in slippery snow. Lake was completely frozen. (October)

Our top hike from a 10 day trip through Patagonia. There is a large free parking lot at the trailhead, but it is also easily walkable from most places in Chalten. We decided to get up early and started hiking at 7:00 AM, which seemed like a perfect time. We only saw 2 other hikers and it felt like we had the trail to ourselves. We also had the summit to ourselves for about 15 mins. On the way down there were a lot of people coming up on guided treks, so I think we made it out about 45 mins before most of them.

Must-do hike! The hike itself is very entertaining, with plenty of great views. The final destination, Lago de los Tres, is gorgeous, and the view of Fitz Roy/Chaltén on a clear day is amazing. If you are in good shape and experienced, you can probably finish the hike in 7 hours. I am not in great shape but good enough to finish in 8.5 hours (including a few stops at interesting locations), plus the time at the Lago de los Tres (we stayed for close to an hour). Bring your hiking poles, particularly for the last kilometer!

The best trek I have ever done, difficult at the end only but really isn’t a problem at when you reach the lake. Simply stunning, I couldn’t leave and ended up staying 4 hours just sitting by the lake!

Great day hike or overnight at Poincenot for Sunset and Sunrise at Fitz Roy. The trail is super well maintained and quite easy. Some elevation right off the bat and then a lot of flatter ground. Final 1.5km gets you 400m of elevation so you can imagine it’s just straight up zigzag through the rocks. Loved the hike, stayed a night at Poincenot (free campsite with bathrooms and river for water). Lovely overnight to return the same way or continue to an adjoining trail to Los Torres the next day.
