Such an incredible hike which offers panoramic views of the lakes around Bariloche and tremendous old forests. It is an extremely popular option departing from Bariloche, and hikers can also take one of the ski gondolas which still run in summer. From there, there is an option of either taking a shortcut that requires some strenuous bouldering, or a longer but more relaxed route through a forest. Refugio Frey is well equipped with comfortable beds and good facilities, although camping is an option too.

HikingScramble

This walk starts by taking the cable car and chair lift close to the ridge line. From there it is a difficult 3 miles. First with a mile long traverse across a rock field. The several descending scramble before reaching the refuge. Locals will tel you 3 or 4 hours. Our inexperienced group took over 6. This effort comes with wonderful views. This area is all open to the weather / sun. Leaving the refuge for the walk back to the cable car base the ground is generally good but the dirt is like talcum power. And just as slick. This is a long slog. Few views as rewards. Experience needed for thus hike.

All reviews are pretty accurate... A great trail with a mixture of shade and sun. There’s also a mixture of shrubbery and old growth forest. Then there’s a rocky portion up high. Views are outstanding everywhere. Trail condition is excellent when I hiked it in early December.

Scenic hike to a beautiful mountain lake and refugio. Starts out relatively easy at the ski center, cabs should know how to get you there. First half is fairly easy as you make your way relatively exposed along the mountainside with great views of the Bariloche area and its lakes. After that you get into a pretty strenuous uphill section for the last several miles. It was about 7.5 miles for us one way, so a decently long day if you’re going out and back. We camped at Refugio Frey for the night. It was decently windy in January but almost all of the campsites have nice stone barriers constructed on the windward side, giving you a nice sheltered area to pitch your tent (you should still stake it well though and bring some extra guylines just in case). At the lake there are several trails you can take to explore around the area if you’re feeling extra energetic. Overall it was a fun hike, a little boring on the 2nd half but the end made it worth it, especially if continuing on to Refugio Jakob.

Espectacular! Las vistas son hermosas y a lo último tuvimos un poco de nieve en el sendero. No es tan difícil como dicen si tienes un poquito de experiencia en senderismo. Lo recomiendo 100%.

Fantastic trail, with amazing view at the top. 4 hours one way at moderate pace with large backpack for overnight stay in Refugio (definitely recommend!) first part provides little shade, but the trail moves into forested areas after about an hour. The last hour is quite steep and includes climbing over some rocks. When we walked last week, the last 5 minutes of the trail included a walk in snow.

Great hike with amazing views. Definitely a must do if you have a few days in Bariloche. It’s about 4 hours one way at a moderate to slow pace. First hour is very flat with shade, next hour is also fairly flat but is sunny with open views of the surrounding mountains and lakes. The third hour begins the incline through a forest, and the final hour the incline increases as you move above the tree line (the views are great!) until you reach the refugio. I would rate it a moderate/hard due to the length and the final incline. Views from the refugio and lake are incredible, worth the hike. Pack layers!

this was close to 13 miles round trip from the little shopping area at the base of the mountain. the last mile or 2 was pretty difficult with steep terrain but there were lovely views throughout the entire hike. at the summit you can use a bathroom and purchase a snack. bring your own toilet paper!

Highly recommend. Not too difficult at all, similar to the start of Fitz Roy with a less steep incline. Really beautiful views with a place to relax at the top. We had great weather!

Demanding ridge line hike before descending into the crater that is Refugio Frey. When the weather is right (which it was in our case) this is a must-do hike for anyone in the San Carlos de Bariloche Area. Camping at Refugio Frey was well organised.

Hike was amazing - but it is 13 miles round trip and 2500 feet elevation. The mileage does not include walking around lake at top of Refugio Frey, which we did so our trip ended up being about 14 miles. Well worth it but manage expectations!

Such an incredible hike. You get terrific panoramic views of the lakes around Bariloche and tremendous old forests. The hike can be quite strenuous, especially as you start to approach the refugio, where you are going at quite a steep angle for the last kilometer. The refugio is very bare bones, with beds a bathroom and a small kitchen. They do not charge for staying (at the time I went in 2016), but simply ask that you carry a small bag of garbage with you when you go back down the mountain. The final view around the refugio is stunning, steep sharp cliffs capped with snow completely envelope the surroundings, truly the most gorgeous hike I have ever been on.
