Coming up the 金面山 side can be quite steep and muddy, but the trail is enjoyable and has good variety from trail to boulders.

Easy walk. The view is good, and at the end you will enter the cave of water curtain which is the highlight!

Dense forest at some points. Steep climb could be rated as hard, i am pretty fast and it still took me 3 hours. Good excersise and mostly forrest trail with limited stairs. View on top could be better, views during the hike are good.

I suggest skipping Mt. Erziping - as of July 2020 the path is almost non-existent, and the summit is so overgrown that there is no view. Datun Mountain paths are very steep in places (might be described as a scramble), but a good walk with good views nevertheless.

Introduction: .Huoyanshan (火炎山) also known as Flame Mountain, is a natural prominence in the south of Miaoli county far approximately 30 min by car from Taichung city. It's immediatly recognizable heading from south as a group of red sharp peaks, way more similar to burned shards as you get closer. However, behind this dusty flamed face a deep green forest is hidden, this contrast makes of Huoyanshan an unique place. The trail: .It was my first time here, althought the insane heat (35°C / 95°F) me and my wife had a wonderful easy hiking/running on sunday afternoon. Here come my first two suggestions, AVOID weekends for the crowd, and afternoons for the heat; ideally early morning would be great. Luckly most of the visitors got stucked along first part of the trail (sorry my gps is unclear), where they enjoyed and blogged the panorama over the stunning cliff. So the first segment has many ups and downs, arid vegetation and a lot of panorama. The feeling of the ground is pretty good due to his softness, density and rounded rocks, which means trustable and perfect for barefoot or thin soles. But what comes further is even better: After around one hour of average speed, ridge gets thinner and thinner but don't worry cause isn't dangerous at all and many hepful ropes will guide your stability. This small ridge-segment leads slowly into a brilliant, fresh forest where the soil is less dusty and feels even more trustable. Following the the track deep in the forest we speeded up running trough a mixed vegetation of bamboos, palms, ferns and cheery blossoms. By the end of the trail you may find some stands selling olives, fresh fruit and drinks including fresh coconut wather. Other thoughts: .Sadly all the directions are given in chinese only, my suggestion for english-only-speakers is to follow a gps track. .Bring at least one liter hydration liquid with you. .I personally recommend this path for trail a playful trail running practice.

Recommend trying to find the “secret” cave-tunnel! Off the beaten path, but well worth the search. Past the well-trodden bridge and walking path, the island is a great place to explore for a long morning.
