July 18th (TMB - Day 8) From Champex-Lac to Col de Forclaz and then we stayed in a small hotel in Le Buet - Hotel du Buet. As soon as the high level clouds cleared this morning, the Grand Combin dominated the view from the terrace of our hotel. Our morning started with a nice breakfast in the stately dining room of the Hotel Splendide. We continued to enjoy this picturesque area with our shaded hike around the lake with the mountains casting their shadow over the water. This was followed by an hour and a half of easy hiking along the "Bovine Route" that herders once used to guide their stock across the mountains, catching the sound of cowbells tinkling in the breeze as we walked. Continuing across the rolling terrain, we enjoyed views of the rocky Dents du Midi and ascended through the forest to lookouts high over the lovely Rhone Valley and the town of Martigny. The views of the Bernese Alps were quite impressive before beginning an easy descent to the Col de Forclaz (3,900'). One of the most memorable parts of the hike was the steep ascent up “the goat trail”. Colin, Jenna and I hiked it non-stop without poles (so we could use our hands for this quasi-scramble) and beat the rest of the gang by 15+ minutes, with Wes coming in 4th 5-10 minutes later. We picked a strategic shaded spot to rest while we waited for the rest of the team to catch up and then enjoyed a break in an area where the cows had fertilized well. Part of hike overlooked the Rhône valley and river. We had a Special fondu dinner at the hotel. While it was good, I enjoyed the fresh salad with a Dijon vinaigrette dressing the most. Accompanying the fondue was a nice plate of local cured meats. Hôtel du Buet Haute-Savoie, France Tel. (33) 4 50 54 60 05 Tel. (33) 7 86 87 73 14 https://www.hotelbuet.com/en/content/home
