Well, yeah it’s beautiful, but it’s a constant uphill for the first mile and a half: 2600 feet elevation change, to be exact. As in no flat walk at all. Then, when you get to the top, the trails goes back downhill again. That when we said enough. Going back down was very painful on the knees. We could have taken the cable car back down, but where’s the fun in that. So why do I give it 5 stars? Well it’s, you know, the SWISS ALPS! It’s beautiful!

Completed September 24th, 2019. Walked 3.4 miles from hotel in Lugano to gandria to reach the trail head. Prior to starting we walked down into the charming and seemingly deserted village of gandria and found a cafe open for a pre-hike cappuccino. Awesome view of the lake in the cafe. Hike itself was mostly well marked, and consistently steep, as advertised. The village of Bre was adorable. We went right at the fork on the way up and it was shorter and steeper as expected. Came down the other way and was more gentle on the old knees. Views at the summit were great! It was our first hike in the region and the view helped orient ourselves with the landscape. After we made it back down to bre we cheated and jumped on the funicular and rode it back down to Lugano. It was the first means of transportation in which we made use of our newly acquired Swiss travel pass... great way to break in the pass and save the knees. My only grip about the hike was the significant portion of rocky path. The rocks are mostly set, and it’s evident a lot of love has been put in to build and maintain the trail, but it’s a killer on old knees coming down. Would definitely do it again.

Thoroughly enjoyed this river walk. Very Lord of The Rings. Easy stroll with art works along the way.

Really nice and challenging hike. The views are well worth it. It’s very hard to get to the start of the trail by bus so expect few extra miles if you start from Gambria.

Very nice hike along the river and passes through typical villages. That of the descent.

Day #3 on Headwaters Trek. Started trek at Gotthard Pass. Headed up to Lake Lucendro and the Head of the Reuss. Continued on alpine road then down steep trail to Ronco which is on the Ticino River. A nice time was had by all!

The trail map is completely wrong. It shows trails where there are none. We had to bushwhack our way to the tram. (Disclaimer: we also did the trail in reverse.)

Wow! We were jet lagged and looking for something mellow. This hike was amazing! Super well maintained and lightly trafficked on a Tuesday midday. Waterfalls, art installations, Swiss cabins, mountain vistas, rushing river soundtrack. Exceed all expectations. We also ate at the nearby Osteria Vittoria— it was amazing too!

Amazing breathtaking views. Very recommended. I got back using the road and it saved me 45 mins.

Heavy trail for running! Many parts have to be taken slowly. 100% off-road within nature.

Incredible
