Backpacking

We were on the ViaAlpina trek from Meiringen to Kandersteg, and this was our last leg of the journey. From the bivouac we left at 7am towards the Hohtürli pass 2778m high. You should count between 3h30 and 4h to reach the pass. The slope gradient is fairly constant, and finishes in a scree and with the famous 570 big wooden steps that you will remember for a while! The view at the top is amazing from all sides. We were at the top at 10.45am and started our long descent towards the Oschinensee at 11. We decided to go down as much as possible before stoping for lunch. We had lunch behind a small cabin overlooking the Oschinensee, you will find the spot if you go left after the first few berghaus that you come across. To continue, we chose the upper trails overhanging the lake as it is more scenic. It keeps going up and down for 1 or 2km, and then starts to go down towards the main road. Once you have reached the main pathway where you will see tourists arriving from the gondolas, you are almost there! Another hour mostly spent in the forst, and you will see Kandersteg from close! We reached Kandersteg train station at 2.45pm, and that was the end of our 4-day hike from Meiringen to Kandersteg.

Absolutely stunning views and a very cool little historical village in the middle of the mountains! Be sure to eat lunch at the Meglisalp Gasthof Restaurant, best cordon bleu I've ever had!

Beautiful hike. Starts off with a 45-1 hour accent to the lake on a rocky trail. The lake is wonderful - and cold - so wait for a dip on the return. From there you head up again a steep but shaded trail and I recommend doing both summits it is only a 15 min detour. Amazing views all around. Birds and mountain goats and a good time. Took a lap around the lake on the way down. Worth it if you have the energy.

Super hard hike but rewarding as hell. Be prepared for a long and challenging day, no matter if you start from Griesalp or Kandersteg.

HikingNo shadeRockySnow

Really nice trail! We did it the other way around and we think that’s a better experience because the beauty builds up nicer. Path is rocky which looks much better than a clean path. Very little shade so apply your sunscream often. The peak in the middle is het most beautifull and gives you amazing views on both sides!! Can tell you more but that will spoil the experience.

Gorgeous beyond belief. Mileage is probably not correct. Restaurant at top that also has rooms. The last two miles gets your attention. The lake on way down also has rooms. Train from lake as an option for end of day. Must for a beer. Lots of steep up and down. Steps with rope. Down not as steep. Stay in Griesalp. Never regret.

Mountain biking

I found the App does not edit well. It kept giving the start point as my end point with no way for quick edit. I request a refund within 30 day period and AllTrails does not honor their sales agreement on requested refund within 30 days. My friend on hike used Gala GPS and it worked better and was free.

TMB - Day 9 Today we started in Trient, Switzerland and Hiked to the French border and enjoyed breathtaking views of Mont Blanc and a number of other peaks and the Chamonix Valley. Visibility was excellent and we saw all of the major peaks around Argentière and Chamonix. Our path followed an old smuggler's route back into France. We hiked to Col de Balme (7,186'), the border between Switzerland and France, and ate a wonderful lunch with homemade quiche and fresh salad along with a couple of French and Belgian beers. The ascent to Col de Balme and it’s picturesque refuge that marks the border between France and Switzerland, was long, but gradual. The views to Mont Blanc and the Chamonix valley were absolutely phenomenal! We descended to our hotel, Hotel La Couronne, in Argentière, just north of Chamonix. On the way we stopped for lunch at Les Ecuries de Charamillon (an excellent restaurant) and then hiked down a trail through a small ski area called Le Tour, and then down to Telecabine Le Tour De Balme at the base of the valley and into the charming, alpine village of Argentiére at the foot of Mont Blanc to our very nice Hotel. We had a team dinner at our hotel and it’s excellent restaurant. The Hotel de la Couronne was built in 1865 with the beginning our mountaineering and modernized in subsequent years while retaining its authenticity - its the only hotel of the nineteenth century in the Chamonix valley that has not changed its activity since its construction. This trail is ok but the first couple of kilometers is just walking up a dirt road, at a steep incline. This trail is not flat which is why it is ranked moderate. It is only suitable for some kids as the incline is steep. Still, lots of nature with some great views of the valley. In late March there was still a lot of snow to trek through as you approach the lake.
