Backpacking

A magical experience. Completed out of season in September so shops on the trail were not open. No sunrise as the weather that day was overcast BUT I knew this would be likely given time of year. An incredible experience nonetheless. Started at around 2am and reached summit by 4:30am. Not hugely challenging to an experienced hiker and I did it in trainers because I didn't have my boots with me, which was fine as the route is mostly steps. Number one thing to do in Sri Lanka - highly recommend!

Great view from the top. Not a hard hike but if you’re scared of heights you better focus on the steps. A must do!

Hiking

The trail is quite easy in the beginning but it gets harder as you reach the top. It’s doable so you mustn’t worry about not being able to reach the top. The view from the top of the mountain is phenomenal. I suggest that you hike for the sunset or sunrise because then you’ll be able to see the beautiful change of color in the scenery. There is a statue of Lord Buddha on the top a bit before you reach the summit and it’s amazing to see how people in the past had brought the bricks up the rock to build the statue! I was expecting a better view from the summit but maybe it’s because I have very high expectations. So, go for it and all the best!

This isn’t exactly a “hike”. Which is understandable because you can’t climb the rock, it’s a mixture of ancient stairs, and metal infrastructure attached to the side. An incredible view from the top, great history! Quite a busy location as it is a tourist location. Watch out for killer bees!

Not exactly a “hike” to get to. It is more so a concrete path and is a decent walk to get to. Not sure if they’re are actual “hiking” trials around it, considering it is surrounded by tea farming. The Nine-Arch bridge is spectacular, although there are many tourists. Hard to get a good picture without other people in it.

A misty morning with an abundance of wildlife to see and enjoy! Snakes, birds, monkeys, lizards, spiders and butterflies. you name it... The hike is relatively easy. The forest is quite dense, so you're covered from the sun. Go take a refreshing swim at the waterfall. Ask for a guide at the entrance and enjoy!

A really tough climb of 200m due to the heat and humidity. Best to climb early morning as the midday sun is scorching. A good level of fitness is required due to the 1200 plus steps some of which are very narrow and steep. Tips: An umbrella is handy for welcome shade when resting and taking in the views as the heat can be intense. Wear a good pair of trainers with grip to support your ankles and prevent slipping on gravelly areas. Be aware of the steep $30 charge per tourist to climb the rock and note that this place can be very overcrowded. We climbed the rock early March 2020. Great views at the top!

If you’re going to do one hike in Sri Lanka, this should probably be it! Super busy when you get to the bridge as everyone is waiting for the trains but you should be able to get a decent spot to take the train on bridge shot Ella is famous for. Walk back to Ella along the train tracks for the local experience!

A bit on the absurdly expensive side to get in, but was interesting and obviously better than Pidurangala in terms of interesting architecture and history. Definitely not a hike, super touristy and busy.

Great little hike - short and definitely gets the heart rate up! Last 1/4 is a scramble over rocks but nothing too hard or technical. Great views of Sigiriya and only 500 rupees, so super affordable! Only recorded the way up so people can see how quick it is - there’s one narrow part at the top where we were stuck waiting for 5 minutes so 25-30 mins up and 20 minutes down.

It’s a big tourist attraction. Paid entrance. $30 per person. Was basically back to back with people the whole way to the top. Very interesting historical site but I wouldn’t go there expecting a hike in nature.

Really great hike but harder than I expected! The first 3/4 are stairs built into the mountain and the last 1/4th is scrambles. The view from the top is absolutely worth it though! I went with my family including my 70 year old dad and 60 year old mom. We all made it so its doable!

Many Sri Lankan's hike this paved path with about 5000 steps to reach the top where there is a shrine which is said to contain Buddha's footprint. It is customary to climb in in the dark to reach the top for sunrise. We left our hotel about 2:15am and could have completed the climb in under 2.5hrs but stopped near the top at a tea house for a warm drink out of the cold wind because there was a long time until sunrise. At the top there were many locals - quite a few of whom looked like they spent the night up there huddled under blankets. About an hour before sunrise the jockeying for position began to get a good place to see sunrise. Close to sunrise some musicians started - it was a magical experience. After sunrise go to the other side of the peak to see the amazing conical shadow the mountain casts. About 1.5hrs to get down. We did it with kids aged 10 and 12 and we do a bit of hiking so are reasonably fit. Highly recommended.

Started around 2.30am from Nallathanniya (Hatton side) and reached to the top in 2 hrs and 35 mins. Trail was very clean and plenty of shops to buy water, food etc. the view from the top is amazing. Coming down was much quicker

For starters, I have to say that Sri Lanka in general blew my mind, it is such an incredible country. Adam’s Peak was hard, we left at 2am and arrived around 6am, it is very hard, but once you get to the top and you witness the sunrise coming out over that view, it will blow your mind. I will never forget it and the view coming down is breathtaking. I would recommend this to anyone!!

The trail consists of 5,000 uneven stairs. It takes around 6 hours for the round trip. Leave at 2am highly recommended to see the sunrise.

Started climbing at night since that's when my bus got there and I didn't want to pay for a guest house. 100s of Pilgrims sing their way to the top even after dark. I slept in the temple at the top so I could catch the sunrise with the pilgrims. It was shoulder to shoulder with others in a room on a concrete floor, (bring your own sleeping bag!) but everyone was very friendly. There is pretty much no room when it comes time for the sunrise because of all the tourists trying to get pictures.
