#10 - Cova del Pla de les Muletes - El Bartolo - Desert de les Palmes
Parque Natural del Desierto de las PalmasLength: 8.1 mi • Est. 4 h 46 m
This is a mandatory route for those who love hiking and cycling since the ascent to the popularly known as El Bartolo is the highest peak of the Serrada de les Palmes. Actually this mountain is called Alt de Colomer or El Montsoriu, but it has a lot of history behind it ...
The Natural Park where it is located is neither a desert nor is it full of palm trees. It was called that because the Order of Carmelites, who settled in those lands at the end of the 17th century, used to call the places where they made their spiritual retreats "deserts". "Las Palmas" comes from the margalló or palm heart plant, used to make brooms before the arrival of plastic and very abundant in that mountain range.
Its highest peak, El Bartolo was nicknamed that way due to the Carmelites of 1694, as one of the monks was known as Brother Bartolo and decided to isolate himself and live in a cave near Alt de Colomer for some years. This monk died far from that place, more specifically in the mountain of Huesca, but the hermitage that was built on that summit in honor of San Miguel was called Bartolo in his honor.
In addition, this route is perfect to enjoy the snow in the shortest possible time if you live in Castellón or its surroundings.
