The Camino del Norte, also known as the Northern Way are the designations of the pilgrimage routes starting in Irun and finishing at the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. This route takes pilgrims along the wonderful Northern coast of ‘Green Spain’ from the Basque Country, across Cantabria, Asturias and on to Santiago de Compostela in the center of Galicia. You will be able to enjoy an amazing scenery of dramatic cliffs, beautiful sea, sandy beaches, historical cities and towns, pasture fields and forest. Pilgrims also have the option to take an alternative route from the city of Oviedo, where the Camino del Norte connects with the Camino Primitivo and then continues on to Santiago de Compostela. Legend has it that the remains of the Saint Apostle Santiago are buried there. Every spring and summer, many people follow its routes as a form of spiritual path or retreat for their spiritual growth. Note (January 2020): the road from Afur to the coast is currently closed, but an alternative road has been established The route runs along a perfectly marked path with beautiful views of the sea. In Afur it is best to first walk about 600 meters up the road uphill towards La Meseta until the path turns left towards the hiking trail.
