Medium hike route that requires great effort due to the accumulated unevenness, over 1,000 meters and due to the muddy terrain conditions and puddles during most of the year in some sections (from the road to the beginning of the route). The gamón or white asphodel or rod of San José is a lily plant, with white spike flowers and sword-shaped leaves. In its day it must have abounded in the Aramo, because the Gamoniteiro is a variant of the same root. In turn, Gamonal, is a prominent summit to the north of the Sierra del Aramo (Lena, Quirós, Proaza, Morcín, Riosa and Santo Adriano), at whose southern base is Angliru (1,573), a mythical reference of cycling since 1999. It is a protected landscape and platform with numerous valleys, fields, caves and sinkholes, caused by karst dissolution processes, where limestone rock peaks rise, whose roof is the Gamoniteiro. The Sierra del Aramo, 20 kilometers southwest of Oviedo, stretches for about 15 kilometers. From Peñerudes (430) (Morcín) to the north to Alto de la Cobertoria (1,179) at noon, where it connects with the northern foothills of the Ubiñas Massif (2,417). Measuring 7 kilometers wide, this imposing limestone mass separates the Caudal basins to the east and the Trubia to the west. The upper platform of the sierra, where the mountains with a generally flattened silhouette emerge uniformly, contrasts with the verticality of the apparently inaccessible side walls. Also noteworthy in the vicinity of the eastern area in Morcín is the presence of the Monsacro, an immense solitary calcareous mass surrounded by deep valleys, a kind of peninsula on land linked to the main nucleus of the Aramo through a supposed isthmus, the Alto de Viapará. where the road to Angliru runs. That presence is a constant reference from different perspectives throughout the journey.Show more
