A great circular of the Ben avoiding the crowded mountain path. Note that the Ledge route is a scrambling route and although any real exposure can be avoided, there are a couple of sections where you need to be comfortable with airy drops to your sides. Topping out, follow the plateau for some distance until the summit of Ben Nevis is reached. Carry straight on past the shelter and down onto the CMD arête for a wonderful exposed ridge line to the the summit of Carn Mor Dearg. The descent can be taken straight down towards the CIC hut for the most direct route to link up with the track in the glen or continue along the high ridge to Carn Dearg and Dearg Beag and down, this can be wet and boggy though.

The middle section passes through a large clear cut. Views from the fort across to Ben Nevis and down the glen were fantastic though. Also, the track on the listing starts from inside a private campground. The actual public trailhead is from the Braveheart parking area.

Ran here as part of a big WHW trip. Quite steep to the summit. Not a great deal left from the actual Iron Age fort, but the views are majestic.

This is hard but rewarding. Make sure you are prepared physically and have appropriate gear. The weather can change in an instant with high winds and can get cold quickly. Did I say this is hard? Not for everyone.

Getting from point to point is pretty straight forward. There's lots of amenities at most stops (hostels, bed and breakfast type places) . As long as you don't have dietary restrictions you can buy food along the way if needed as well. I will say it's one of the hardest backpacking experiences I've done mainly due to the rain we experienced, midges, and bogs bogs SO MANY BOGS. Depending on what time of year you go you may be able to avoid the bugs and poor weather. The views you'll experience will be like no other place on the planet. If you decide to do this trail feel free shoot me a message if you have questions!

We started up the Mountain Path which is crowded. At the “intersection” by a beautiful lake we veered down the valley to merge with the Carn Mor Dearg Arete which provided stunning views of Nevis and the valley. Plus you get another “Munro” after a 1600 foot scaling of the adjacent hill. The top of Nevis is cool but crowded and the walk down the Mountain Path is laborious. Great hike nonetheless!!!

A pleasant walk if you take a less direct approach to the summit of Carn Mor Dearg along the ridge. The steep climbs up from the valley as you get closer to the CIC hut are decidedly unpleasant- they’re a bit better in winter conditions. The arête makes the day and is great fun all year round.
