ok if you need a guide, you shouldn't be doing this hike. that's how the locals extort money from tourists. this isn't a stroll in the park and it's rated difficult for a reason. you need to be in shape. but the trail is recognizable and there are markings on trees for the 2 or 3 times it could be confusing.... but bottom line is you're going up. keep going up. on the trail. the hike is hard, but not navigating it. but the whole hike is up up up steps and roots and rocks. no view until the very top. then it's wonderful. bring plenty of water. but the wind through the rainforest was glorious and smelled wonderful and it's not crowded.

You know you've had a good day when your boots, clothes, legs, and arms are all muddy. This hike requires a trail guide because it is very easy to get lost. It is a hard hike, and some places it was very steep that I was literally grabbing tree branches and roots to keep climbing. Kicked everyone's butt, and was totally worth it.

You should be in good shape for this one. Took about 2 hours up and a bit less back. We saw monkies and a wild pig plus lots of birds and butterflies. Beautiful view at top- our day was crystal clear.Only saw one other group of hikers on the trail. We didn’t use a guide because this was a last minute plan. A guide would be a nice distraction ; )

Absolutely beautiful view! Stunning! Breathtaking...literally and figuratively!! Our guide took us up super fast—so we could get back on the ship and holy cow...great workout!

We hiked this on a stop at St. Kitts whike on a cruise. Rented a car found the trail head, took about 5 hrs round trip. My husband is bery adventurous i thought i was gonna die, very hard to kerp on trail and very hard to find your way. Very steep using tree roots and rocks to get you to the top. A bit disappointing when u finally reach the top they have a rope to pull urself up on, very difficult but worth it. How many people can say they climbed to the top of a volcano !!!

Good exertion for a less than half day hike. If your are experienced with hike With rocks and roots this won’t be surprise. If you are not accustomed to that you will find it challenging. Nice to get into the rainforest.

We had reservations for dinner at Belle Mont Farm. We started our hike from there. It does converge with the public pathway. Great experience. Guilt free dinner too. 3-3.5 hours, round trip including sitting at top. Last quarter mile is the most difficult. No guide, minimal marking. Brought sticks didn’t really use them.

We started at Belle Mont Farm (we were hotel guests). Hike is beautiful with lush green forest. Toward the end, some boulder climbing is required (not too much). View at top is gorgeous. We had a guide, but didn’t need. Trails are clear cut. Took us about 3-3.5 hrs total

BRING LOTS OF WATER!! This is a difficult hike, and last 30 min are dangerous (slippery rocks and root climbing) against a steep incline. The trail is very well maintained and marked, and 10 or more people do the hike each day. (Keep in mind that 1 to 4 cruise ships are in port each day, with trail as an excursion) You can absolutely do it yourself, safely, with about 1.5 to 2 hrs up, 1 to 1.5 hrs down.

The other reviews saying this takes 10 hours or that it’s so treacherous you can’t ever do it without a guide are all phony. These are the local guides not wanting people to do it themselves because they make less money.

That said, the guides we met were professional, friendly, and everyone in each of the groups we saw was happy and having a good time. These guides help maintain the trail and they are worth the money. Frankly, having someone tell you the history of the island and makes jokes while you sweat your life away makes for a better time.

Happy trails!

Great hike! Very challenging. Should not be advertised as a volcano hike. It is mostly a rainforest hike. We enjoyed it, but would've done something different only having a short time off the cruise ship.

Has a great Indiana Jones feel. Not a great return on the effort from a view standpoint. Not a "hop off" the cruise boat in sneakers and shorts affair. Boots, long pants highly recommended. Prepare to get dirty.

This was a great hike and more challenging than expected with this being a cruise excursion. It rained the entire time and we were not prepared! Don't be like me, bring a rain jacket and rain pack cover.

Lots of uphill with lush views of the jungle. The view at the top was nice, but we only saw it for a few minutes because of all the mist from the rain.

Did this as an excursion through Royal Caribbean Cruise, it was amazing! Strenuous is no understatement- it's a solid hike. Bits of climbing (ficus roots and rocks), a few places where roots and ropes help. Bring poles (they gave walking sticks with the tour) - the majority of the hike is steep, going down and up. No need for bug spray (Zika) or sunscreen, you'll stay under the canopy 95% of the time. Peek views of ocean and at the top, a breathtaking view of the crater. Once in a lifetime hike, I came back to the boat muddy, bruised, sore all over, and wasted tired - just the way I want to be!

Excellent trail. Pretty well marked, we got off a few times but realized it quickly. Lot of root climbing. Took us 1.5 hours up and 1 down. We didn't get to go down into the crater because it was too wet and slippery. That "trail" is more like rock climbing on a slight incline. I would rate the difficulty a 7.5/10. It is definitely a hike you do not need a guide for. At the top go to the right for the best views on top of the boulders there is a wooden ladder to get to the view. To the left the views are easier to reach but not quite as majestic.

You'll be humming the theme song to Jurassic Park as you clear that final canopy of trees and Mt Liamuiga's summit crater unfurls out of the mist below.
I did this hike solo much to the befuddlement of the few people I encountered on my way up to the trailhead. It was easy to grab a taxi van from Basseterre, as they will drop you right in Newton Ground at the road leading to the trail. Besides sections where I had to climb up using roots as handles, and getting lost for 5 minutes, I thought this was an exceptional excursion. Make sure you turn right at the rim and climb the ladders up to huge throne-like rock where you can look directly down to the crater lake and volcanic fumaroles.

Hiked the Volcano this past week. Not for the feint of heart. Slippery roots and builders throughout the trek. Hiking sticks/trekking poles are a must. Highly recommend as it is such a unique experience.

Excellent hike. Definitely not for those who are not in decent shape. the trail is well marked and you definitely do not need a guide. The hardest part was finding the trail head. it is off the Island Main Road by Newton Ground on the west side of St.Kitts. then a very poor road in to get to the trail head which is just beyond a fence/gate. The hike itself is beautiful but pretty much straight up hill including several areas climbing hand over hand and bouldering in certain spots. Bring food and plenty of water. I'm 50 years old and in pretty good shape. It took me 2.75 hours up and about an hour down.we took a few very brief rests. Make sure you leave yourself plenty of time. Enjoy! The view from the top of the volcano crater is well worth the effort.

A challenge, but well-worth it. Lots of climbing, so make sure you are in shape. If you're booking a guide, opt for an agency that provides walking sticks. They are helpful going up, but lifesavers coming down. Descending steep, wet, rocks when you are exhausted is a recipe for disaster without a stick to brace yourself. The views are outstanding. Be prepared for some humidity. Wasn't much for me, but I grew up in Oklahoma. My California-born wife felt like she could hardly breathe. Bugs are no issue. We didn't apply spray, and didn't receive a single bite. Great trek for the adventurous!

This is the toughest, most rewarding hike I've completed so far. It includes some precarious balancing and calculated hopping across ravines. The bottom is easy but once you get to the top there is some serious scrambling involved. It can be muddy at times and near the bottom the trail can get covered with mangoes falling from the trees. Once you get to the crater rim (you're climbing a volcano, by the way), you can turn around and go back, or go farther up, which involves climbing using some sketchy old ropes and get a great view of the Caribbean Sea, or take a really tough hike into the crater itself. I went farther up but did not go into the crater. I have heard that you really have to be careful to watch for open pits in the crater.

This was a gorgeous hike up a volcano through a cloud forest and I'm so glad I did it.
