Length: 7.3 mi • Est. 5 h 45 m
Note: The elevation gain for the trail is deceiving. The trail goes through several tunnels that avoid big elevation gains therefore, the elevation gain via hiking/walking the trail is much less than 4,000 feet.Show more
#3 - PR1 FLO Trail: Ponta Delgada to Fajã Grande

Length: 13.3 mi • Est. 8 h 4 m
The trail starts in Ponta Delgada, next to the road to the old football field. You will walk along the tarmac road, always having the Northern coast and Corvo Island on your right. At the crossroads, near Albernaz Lighthouse, you can detour to the lighthouse or turn right to the left, ascend the cement road until you find an old track on your right. Follow the track, between hydrangeas and endemic vegetation, until you have an ascent on your left. You should not walk straight ahead because this old trail will take you to the landslide and will make you turn back. You will follow the track on the left, where the dominant vegetation is heath (Erica azorica) and cedar (Juniperus brevifoglia). When you reach the edge of the cliff you will find some wooden stairs and then the trail continues by descending to steep track with natural stone steps. You need to be careful, especially when the stones are wet. After the steep descent, you will find the old track that will take you along a stone track, until you reach Ponta da Fajã and Fajã Grande. Currently, the trail begins and ends in the same place as the previous one, but it contours the collapse by a section recently recovered. The course begins in Ponta Delgada, along the path that gives access to the old soccer field. We walk along the tar road always with the north coast and Corvo Island to our right. At the fork near the Albernaz Lighthouse we can make a detour to the lighthouse or turn left just up the cement road until you find an old path on our right. We follow this path between hydrangeas and endemic vegetation until a climb to the left. One should not go forward because this old railroad takes us to the collapse and will force us to turn around. We follow the path to the left where the dominant vegetation is constituted by Urze and Cedro-do-mato. When we reach the edge of the cliff we find a wooden staircase and then the trail begins to descend on a sloping floor with steps in natural stone. And you need to be careful especially when the stones are wet. After the steep descent you will find the ancient trail that leads us through a stone paved road to Ponta da Fajã and Fajã Grande.Show more
#4 - Trilha PRC2SMI Praia - Lagoa do Fogo
Reserva Natural de Lagoa do Fogo

Length: 6.8 mi • Est. 4 h 1 m
This trail starts on a beaten earth track, in a zone of pastures. Walk until you reach a water tank. Then turn to the left and start ascending trough a forest of Eucalyptus, Australian Cheesewood (Pittosporum undulattum), Accacias (Acácia sp.) and Kahila Garland lilies (Hedychium gardneranum). A bit further you will also find a few species of “Espadana”, a plant from New Zealand, which was woven and spun in an ancient factory whose ruins you can still visit. Follow the signs until you reach the beginning of a “levada” (water channel), along which the trail runs. Be careful because the trail might be muddy. Along the “levada” you will find many species of endemic plants like: “Uva-da-Serra” (Vaccinium cylindraceum), Green Heather (Erica azorica), Laurustinus (Viburnum tinus), “Tamujo” (Myrsine retusa), etc. During the ascent there are several places from where you can enjoy a magnificent view towards the Southern coast of S. Miguel, the Vila Franca do Campo, its islet and Ribeira da Praia. After walking for about 2 kms along the “levada”, you will reach an open area, with big slopes on both sides and after walking a bit further you will reach the bank of Lagoa do Fogo. In this area it is necessary to be careful with the seagulls, as they might be very aggressive, especially during the nesting period (April to May). The return is made on the same track. Almost all of the trail is included in an area classified as a community site and nature reserve. It is our responsibility to ensure its biodiversity by conserving this natural habitat.Show more

Length: 2.3 mi • Est. 1 h 25 m
This hike will take you on a circular route in Faial da Terra. It begins near the bus stop. Go up the asphalted road until the fork where you should continue straight by a dirt road, always along the left bank of the stream. The vegetation is thicker and there are several orchards on both banks of the creek along the trail. There are winding roads in paving stones, please be very careful due to its slippery ground. You will have to cross a bridge over the stream to get to Salto do Prego. On the way back, return by the same way, and then follow right on the second fork towards Aldeia do Sanguinho, an old village.Show more
