Nice wide levada trail, no scary drop offs. A bit hard to follow near the reservoir with a parallel trail and jeep road.

We only did the westerly half but it’s a very pretty trail in the forest, not any great views, but peaceful without any scary drop offs. Good for beginners who don’t want a mountainous levada.

One of the best hikes on the island. Some websites talk about the trail being closed, in 2018 that refers to the easterly route not the westerly route to Pico Rubio, Which was open, at least in November 2018.

!!! MUST READ !!! It was a lot of fun, but please be careful and check the tide to plan trip. 70% of the day water is too high to do the walk along the shore. We got really wet and if you go at wrong time, your life is in danger. The climb in JdM is a little wet and very slippery. Medium high shoes are good for ankle support on beach rocks.

If you do only one way -11km- it's pretty easy but beautiful. Almost walking on the same level - not climbing up . Great views all the time . We had some rain shower ,fog and clouds ( January) so be prepared to get wet. Might be slippery, too.
If you miss the bus in Portela it's easy to grab the taxi there ( To Funchal ,6 Euro per person :) ).

It’s more like 6-7 miles round trip if you go to the end (past the cafe). Loved it

Gorgeous, lightly utilized, many unique features.

Did this hike with my girls 2016. Amazing, you know the feeling inside... harmony, happiness, exitement.... don't miss it!! I will do the hike again in april -19.

Very very easy. Short but sweet views at the overlook.

Very easy and super beautiful! Explored off the course too which is worth it! Stunning views!

Excellent course with stunning views! My GPS says it was 8.8 miles.

Easy scenic walk. I didn’t download the map so I didn’t do the exact course but highly recommended.

Description is incorrect. This course is actually closer to 16 miles. Quite hard and long. Plan for at least 8+ hours. I was expecting it to be 12 miles so I did not plan accordingly and could not finish it.

I did this route in reverse. Beautiful easy trail with a variety of views.

Short but sweet and beautiful trail. Wear pants as the thistle bushes are overgrown, trail.

Beautiful but quite difficult trail. Map a little bit hard to follow as I was never able to get to the end but worth a shot.

Fantastic trail with a wide mix of terrain and levels. First part is very easy. Second half gets more technical and hilly. Bring a headlamp for all the tunnels! Stunning views!

The description notes this as good for all skill levels. Definitely not. It's a medium to hard walk, but it's great! As well as this walk being marked as "easy", the short distance is also deceiving as it's very steep both ways.
