The trail is reasonably well maintained. Fairly steep, not recommended during or after rain conditions. Moderate / high difficulty if you walking down (some walk the other way!). We took funicular (one-way 11 euro) to the top (Monte) and then walked the trail all the way down to Funchal. The first 1 km is a stone road. Then approximately 2km of steps in clay, often very steep. Then approximately 1km of non-functioning narrow levada pathway alongside a steep stone wall. Not a single bench along the way. Eventually the trail path ends when you pass underneath the highway bridge in an upscale village near Botanical gardens. From there it's 10 minutes down a street to Funchal. Instead of suggested path alongside the highway / river, we opted for a quaint residential street Rua da Rochinha.
