Length: 5.8 mi • Est. 2 h 54 m
This trail begins and ends in the town of Furnas and takes around 3 h. The route begins in Três Bicas and continues on through this area until it begins to climb on a tarmac road that leads to Lagoa das Furnas. Following the signs carefully you will reach Caldeiras da Lagoa which is about 2.5 km into the trail. You will often see tourists here watching local inhabitants use the high temperatures in the ground to cook traditional dishes. The trail continues along the lakeside, circling the lake on an easily accessible beaten earth path. After about 3 kms walking you will reach the Hermitage of Nossa Senhora das Vitórias, built in the nineteenth century in Gothic style. Then continue along the edge of the stoned paved regional road for about 1.5 km until you come to a turning to your right that leads down to the town of Furnas. Continue along this route and in 30 m you will reach the end of the trail.Show more

Length: 2.1 mi • Est. 1 h 14 m
This short circular trail begins and ends near the Gorreana Tea Factory. Carefully cross the regional highway towards the main gate to the entrance of the tea plantation and keep straight ahead until you see a sign to turn to the left. This is the upward part of the trail, which follows a dirt path across the tea plantation. About 1.200 metres from the start of the trail, you will cross a stone bridge which will take you into an area of pastureland and woods. About 450 metres further on you will find a group of agricultural buildings to your right. Keep straight ahead across more tea plantations and then more pastureland. After crossing a wood of Japanese red cedar, turn left towards the highest point on the trail. Just a little further on, you will see drinking troughs for cattle to your right. After another 100 metres, at the top of the pasture, turn right and walk towards the Casa do Mirante, a house now in ruins, from which you get a wonderful sweeping view over the north coast of the island, from Pico da Vara, to the east, to Ribeirinha, to the northwest. Down below lie the tea plantations and the Gorreana Tea Factory. Go back down the same path and at the end of this stretch you will see a sign indicating a left turn across a field. Keep on alongside a thicket of Japanese red cedar, skirting the pastureland until you get back onto the path, where you should turn left. About 200 metres further on, near an old farmhouse, take the path to your left which will take you back to the entrance to the tea plantation. The final stretch of the trail leads back to the regional highway via the tea plantation. At the end of the trail visit the Gorreana Tea Factory, where you can restore your energy with a tea of your choice.Show more
#4 - PRC35 SMI Moinhos da Ribeira Funda
Maia, Azores, Portugal

Length: 2.0 mi • Est. 1 h 13 m
This small circular route starts and ends at Ribeira Funda (Fenais da Ajuda), next to the Hermitage of Nossa Senhora da Aflição. The main points of interest of this route are the remains of a cluster of water mills, several waterfalls in the terminal part of the Ribeira Funda and wide panoramic views of the west and east coast of the island of S. Miguel. The route is initially made by asphalt (150m) and after about 500 meters you should turn left onto a pasture. The passage through this pasture should be made as close to the cane field on the left side. Visitors are advised to take care and respect for the animals that may be in the area. When you reach a fork you should take the path to the left and descend towards the river, where you will round the ruins of an old one taken along the left side. Here you will find the first water mills. After this detour, you should go up and take the path on the left. The trail continues along the right bank of the Ribeira Funda until you reach the bed of the river where you should cross to the other shore where you can see another cluster of water mills. Here is a detour that will connect to the PR27 SMI Praia da Viola. When returning to the right bank of the river, the trail continues towards the mouth, by the call "Rock of the Father of the North", It is necessary to take special care in this part of the route, especially the people who suffer from vertigo. Upon reaching the top of the rock, the trail continues along a beaten path that will take you to the starting point.Show more

The trail starts off rather steep, and circles back down to the town - this first part has some nice views, trees and grassy paths. The walk along the coast is spectacular, and the beach is a great place for a snack break.Show more

The Fenais da Ajuda walking trail is a short, circular route which begins and ends in the centre of Fenais da Ajuda, near the Parish Council, or Junta de Freguesia. It follows an farm track which soon narrows into a footpath which crosses a wood containing various trees (Japanese red cedar, plane trees and acacia trees), which leads to the bed of the Ribeira do Mato stream. After crossing the stream, the path through the wood rises and then broadens into an agricultural track. Follow the signs, and continue via farm tracks, fields, and footpaths until you reach a small fishing port. The port is no longer in use as it is so small and isolated, but it is a very pleasant place to have a dip when the sea is calm. The trail continues up to the top of the cliff, where you can see a spectacular view of the north coast, especially of the parish of Achadinha to the east, and the Santa Iria vantage point to the west. Follow the agricultural track for about one kilometre, passing the Church of Nossa Senhora da Ajuda, until you reach the point of departure.Show more
