Fantastic views & nice lakes. We read that the car park opens at 5am, so arrived at this time however there were others that had come sooner already so it may be possible to start earlier. The 8km walk from there to Morskie Oko is on tarred road, it was dark getting light and without many people at that time so not bad but quite long without much excitement, on the way back was simply just a walk back to the car as quick as possible!! From the first lake Morskie Oko (where there is accommodation and restaurant/toilets) is when the real hike starts, and it is quite challenging as it's very up from soon after this point. Going up with the chains was easier, also because it was quieter earlier on (we passed Morskie Oko just before 7am), coming down the chains is a bit harder and when there's more people still coming up and going down you do have to wait quite often but you can just enjoy the views and take a rest at these times :) Lots of great view points on the way, and from the peak is of course good but not the only highlight for me. The peak itself is quite cramped when it's busy, so we didn't stay for long. The lakes are stunning, it's a shame but understandable that you are not allowed to swim! Highly recommend.

Very rewarding hike. The paved road up to Morskie Oko was very crowded. If you have the energy take a detour up to the final lake Czarny Staw which in my opinion is the most beautiful.

I took red up and green down, hard to say what is best. Going up kicked my ass in terms of endurance but isn’t technically difficult. There is a serious lack of mountainous terrain here, its basically just a long uphill walk so if you’re looking for an actual challenge and some scrambling don’t do this trek. The pine forest on the way down was a pleasant surprise as it follows the river all the way down, but as soon as you get back to the main track there is floods of people. Worth doing once for the pine forest and views of zakopane on the red trail but a little disappointed.

amazing and very challenging trail. Red line up, blue line down as suggested in previous reviews. the only addition I would make is the overall timing. it's more like 4-5 hours with breaks from start to finish. I'll add a picture of the local map to help future hikers.

Awesome trail! The beginning starts on a simple path heavily trafficked until you reach the turn off. Along the way you will find the entrance to cave for a small fee. The cave is cool, but requires some crouching or crawling and may be a bit flooded, prepare for wet shoes. At the exit of the cave, you can climb over the stairs to the right to a little area with a nice veiw. The stairs lead to a river, more simple path. We took an alternate route; if you continue straight to the middle path instead of turning left to loop back towards the beginning. Take this path through a wooded trail, it will dead end at a pond with a deck. The veiw and overall atmosphere here is absolutely pristine. The pond is surrounded by woods and overlooks the mountain peaks. So peaceful.

Walking

This trail is a 15' wide paved road, so more of a walk than a hike. There is light vehicular traffic as well as the horse carriages that take a lot of people up and down the road. Morskie Oko is one of the most beautiful places I have seen, but it would have been much more rewarding if one didn't have to walk the road the whole way.

I came to Poland to Zakopane in the High Tatras of the Carpathians specifically to hike the trail to Morskie Oko, despite the amount of snow I knew there would be, and depending on the conditions at the time try and reach the lake that overlooks Morskie Oko, Czarny Staw Pod. Generally throughout, the trail follows a road which is used to take tourists up via horse pushed carriages although there are various points where you can follow a side trail which is very much worth it. Beautiful views of the High Tatra mountains throughout but the real gem is at Morskie Oko, a surreal view of the lake and mountains which looks like something out of Game of Thrones. Once here I decided to push to reach Czarny Staw and crossed the frozen lake down the middle and soon found how ardeous reaching the top would be: Snow up to my knees, sometimes to my waist, and a considerable steepness that forced me to scramble most of the way up. Despite almost giving up about 8 times on the way up, I managed to reach the top and was greeted with a whiteout where I couldn't even see the lake directly in front of me, not to mention the mountain peaks behind it. The view of Morskie Oko was incredibly nice but I couldn't relax too long as night was fast approaching and I had to make my way back to the start again. I ended up walking the great majority of the way back alone in utter silence and darkness, a reward in itself. I must note that I did this trail in December, with considerable snow. This meant the trail didn't have much people and had whole kilometers to myself, day and at night. That said, this trail is heavily occupied in summer, just google some pictures and you will see. Despite this, with the immense beauty of the area I am already looking forward to coming back one summer and tackling one of the multi day treks that wind through the mountains and peak some of them. I can at least highly recommend coming here in winter if you are a fan of snow hiking.

Route begins in Koscieliska valley. The valley was very crowded since it is an easy walk and the location of many excursions. Once the red trail splits off and the first major climb starts this thins out to only a handful of hikers. The climb to Chuda Przelacka is quite steep and rocky, and affords beautiful views of the surrounding mountains. From there, you can continue the climb to the Czerwony Wierchy (Red Peaks). From Chuda Przelacka we descended via the green route to the Ornak hut. The first hour of the descent is steep through numerous rock formations and then enters a pine forest. At the Ornak hut the green route rejoins the Koscieliska valley and is a leisurely last descent back to the trailhead. The hut has a kitchen and food and drinks are available.

We tacked on an extra mile to reach the summit at the Slovakian border -- beautiful scenery to enjoy the views and stop for lunch. Highly recommended Mount Giewont itself was extremely crowded at the summit but chain ropes were fun Also, with a little bit of research you can find the huts selling traditional Polish mountain cheeses! (google the oscypek trail)
