Wonderful hike! My daughter and I completed the 4.3 loop and found it challenging but enjoyable. It is quite steep but if you enjoy the beauty of the woods with occaisional glimpses of the river you will like this hike.

First 30 to 40 minutes steep climb to the Civil War era Union fort is strenuous. But once you reach there its all flat and down hill to the overlook. Great workout, great views and interesting history.
I was able to park at trail head due to coming here early on a weekday. Did not see anyone at top .. which was awesome!

We found this walking/ hiking trail tiring and exhausting but it’s worth it once we reached the cliff .. beautiful views of Harpers Ferry town and surrounding rivers..

I would rate this trail as hard, not moderate, because it is steep the entire way up and it doesn’t level out much at any place, but the view at the end is totally worth it! Not a trail for the faint of heart. Also, I would recommend bringing extra water bottles!

Great work out!

GREAT climb. challenging for first hike of the year...but so glad we did it. Harper's ferry appears like a model train set from that high up. We both said Wow!

Very well established trail. Great vista with beautiful view of Harpers Ferry. More crowded than I would have liked.

My ankles are a bit sore, and I have a blister or two, but this hike was awesome! It kicked my butt but I thoroughly enjoyed it. The orange path was pretty rough, kinda steep. A lot of dogs on the path which surprised me. I don’t think my doggo could handle it, but they seemed just fine!

View from split rock is nice, but otherwise the scenery is meh. Could just be the time of the year though.

Great hike with some good altitude gain. I recommend going counterclockwise in order to get the views into Harpers Ferry earlier in the day so photos avoid the sun in your face. Then move up to the north part of the hike in order to enjoy great easterly views for lunch.

This hike is hard enough without a foot + of snow on it. But with the snow, Maryland height's evil stepsister is flat out brutal. I had tried to get up to the overlook during Wednesday's snowstorm, but turned around 3/4 of the way to the top. Today, I noticed someone made it to the top of the mountain, but turned around. So today I carved the path to the overlook.

The overlook at split rock cliff, really all four overlooks were absolutely stunning. I am so glad I fought through the snow to get to them. It was well worth the effort, though I didn't stay too long at any of them as there was a strong wind.

Great hike! The loop is not quite as loop-like as I was hoping. But the overlook is beautiful! Would do again!

We took our dog from the visitors center up to the overlook. Its a beautiful walk about 9 miles round trip. Well marked with very clear paths. We went in March and I bet in warmer months it gets popular on weekends, so be prepared for crowds.

Nice scenic walk. Lots of people on nice weekend days...

Great hike, can be challenging for a beginner but we still loved it and the views were absolutely incredible at the top. Kind of rocky in places so watch your step.

WAY too many people walk this trail now. Even in the winter.

Great view and hike. Can’t wait to go back when it’s not windy

Lots of uphill hiking! The views are spectacular and I loved the signs explaining the history of the area.

Great trail !! I did the trail in the fall !

I've been using this hike to gauge my fitness. From the parking lot under the 340 bridge to the overlook, it took me 1:06..

Great hike with views all the way up and down. Good incline on way up. Somewhat rocky, nice hike with dogs

also saw a military plane/jet similar to an "osprey" fly perpendicular with the ridge line extremely low to the ground, wicked sight.

This trail is great! It’s well marked and a great workout. One of my favorites!

This trail is an awesome, it is and awesome beginner hike that shows a lot of local history .

Had a great time on this trail. Challenging climb in the beginning but worth it once you’re at the top! Plenty of historical sites & views to check out before you begin your decent. Did this in early February so it was a bit cold & windy. Would suggest folks make sure to have a windproof shell or other outer layer to stay comfortable when the wind picks up.

This is a great hike, but the initial ascent is a challenge. Once you are past that, you are fine.

A word of advice: the trail IS well marked. Just don't take the red trail on the way to split rock, take it on the way back. You can continue up on the white blazed Appalachian trail until you come to a fork: you have to go left or right.

Go left. If you go right you will end up at Keys gap way up the road.

Once you go left, the trail is blue blazed, the color signifying it's a trail to an overlook on the Appalachian trail. The trail is easy with a general slow incline downward. A ways down the path the red trail meets the blue trail. Ignore it and keep going straight. There will be some decent overlooks on the left side of the trail. Check them out. Once the blue trail heads sharply downward, you know you are getting close to the overlook.

On the return trip, hit up the red trail on your right. It's MUCH easier and obvious to find on the overlook side than the ascent.

There is no great mystery to hiking this hike. Just follow the white blazes up, turn left at the fork, and follow the blue blazes. It's not hard.

Great hike with many wonderful views. When you come down the steps from visitors center and cross over the road there is a sign for the River trail. This trail follows the Shenandoah into Harpers ferry as well. It is not well maintained and there are no markers but a clear trail that follows the river. Beautiful scenery especially at daybreak. The round trip to Maryland heights then back thru Harpers ferry makes for a great day of hiking.

Steep climb but ohhh so worth the views!!!

One of my all time favorites.
