Nature trips

Walk any of the trails in Turnbull but be sure to also stop for the various view points such as this one. So diverse in this area and if you're quiet and lucky, you can see some wildlife!

Overgrown, the flora is pretty but there was a lot of bees: ran across portion of the trail to avoid being stung. By the time I got to the car I removed 8 ticks (that was with Deet repellent).

Bird WatchingBugs

I took this trail today, June 14 for some birdwatching. Had an encounter with a fledgling bluebird! also managed to spot several eastern kingbirds, a red winged black bird, a woodpecker of some kind. I got back to my car and found two ticks crawling on me which sounds much better than those that hiked this trail a month ago. The sign says "rough trail" but it's not so bad. it's just more natural than many well-traveled or paved over trails

Don’t go for a while! I usually love this trail, but my dog and I are covered in ticks. Like 30 or so.

This trail is covered in ticks. Boyfriend and I had at least 20 on both of us, and over 25 on the dog. We didn’t walk the whole thing due to there being too many ticks. The trail was nice, saw 2 deer and lots of turkey. Very easy walk. Bring extra clothes to change into for after your walk.

Gorgeous hike! Could walk here every day and see something new. Family friendly/paved trails throughout. Saw plenty of wildlife including a moose that we kept our distance from!

Walking

Walked this today with pup and kids. Easy paved path. Beautiful and quite a few walkers out enjoying the day. We stopped for a break to find snakes along the path which was really neat. Some geese and ducks are present. Still a bit early for their babies but should see them arriving soon!

One of my favorite parts of Turnbull. My kids and I always enjoy this area. Watched a porcupine climb a nearby tree one visit at this spot.

I take my 2yo son here on almost a weekly basis and he loves it! We’ve seen porcupines, moose, badger, coyotes, deer, elk, and a huge variety of birds and plants! One day I counted 36 different species of birds in less than 1 hr in this area. I love it here.

Started on the Bluebird trail and then connected to other Turnbull trails. Hiking the road is surprisingly nice. Very little traffics. Nice surface. Shade. The Bluebird trail is also nice except for heavy gravel in center section where shared with service road. Not a good surface for hiking.

The signage will actually call this Pine Lake Loop. If you take just the loop from the parking area it is 1.3 miles. If you add the loop to the visitors center (follow the path into the trees and up toward the trees then turn LEFT toward the visitors center) it'll be the larger loop shown on the alltrails map and that's maybe 2ish miles. Visit this area at sunset! Incredible colors reflecting off the little lakes!

Great loop, easy to connect to some other paths. I love Turnbull and go about once a month. All trails are more of a walk than a hike, however- not much elevation change out there.

This doesn't really qualify as a hike, but it's a quick boardwalk stroll over part of the marshes of Black Horse Lake to a viewing area. There were plenty of waterfowl to be seen in early April. This is an excellent choice for those with limited mobility or toddlers. There is also a vault toilet at the "trailhead".

The hike is an out and back, so it is not as interesting as other trails. However, it was still beautiful and a nice hike to do.

I have hiked this trail many times over the past few years and my experience is different every time depending on the time of year. In March- April I have noticed a lot of bluebirds as the trail name suggests, both the western and mountain bluebird, nut hatches, northern flickers. Sometimes on the back side of the trail you can see Elk and Moose. My favorite experience so far is a couple bucks sparing in early October. May - August, There are some coyotes there that howl at sunset, a group in the public area and a group in the off limits area. One group will howl then stop and listen to the other group howl. It’s an amazing thing to hear. Only downside is there are a lot of ticks in Turnbull so bring the bug spray.
