Peace Over War San Juan Island is well known for splendid vistas, saltwater shore, quiet woodlands, orca whales and one of the last remaining native prairies in the Puget Sound/Northern Straits region. But it was also here in 1859 that the United States and Great Britain nearly went to war over possession of the island, the crisis ignited by the death of a pig.

Lovely loop hike for a bit of exercise! Might’ve done the trail in reverse. Parked at Jackle’s lagoon. Started with easy grade through the woods with peek a boo views of water on our left. I stopped at lagoons 2 and 3 with my dog. We followed a sign to the right after lagoon 3 (lovely, quiet beach) towards Mt. Finlayson and took us on a steady, steep incline that left my dog and I huffing and puffing. Saw afterwards that we cut through to the pacific side a turn too soon rather than looped around. But gorgeous open views of Puget Sound with Lopez to the south east. Great exercise but not rocky. Much cooler in the woods so bring an extra layer or sweatshirt you can peel off once you get on the sunny side. Came upon a deer in a berry bush right next to us! Only saw 4 people the entire time. Went on a Thursday in August.

The majority of the trail and the destination are wonderful. No complaints there. My issue lies with the poor signage leading to the trail itself. The parking lot is probably .5 miles, though a private residential neighborhood, before reaching the trailhead. Very poorly marked but a great walk once you find the start.

Easy hike with great a great view at the top of the mountain. Lots of deer and a few raccoons.

Fairly easy, beautiful hike. Maps and signs help although there are a few areas that can be difficult to know which way to go.

Short and absolutely beautiful.

Was like hiking in Muir Woods without the people

My favorite trail in the San Juans. Make sure to do a loop. Look for foxes in the meadows.

Short and to the point, literally. Great for seeing some sweet, sweet marine life. Whale spray, sea otters and if you’re lucky, not a lot of humans. Get to the trailhead by bike if you’re doing it right and take your lunch out to the flat rocks to enjoy the peace and quiet.

Some of the best views on the island are from this point. I'd definitely suggest coming for sunrise!

Excellent hike through woods which takes you near the bay to Iceberg point and back. Kid friendly

We enjoyed the woods and seeing the deer! The moss around the base of the trees all around the water was beautiful. My wife and I loved the trail!

Great trails for seeing the natural beauty of the island. Everyone we met on the way was very friendly and helpful along the way. Would recommend these trails to anyone.

We took the main trail part of the way up, then veered off on a secondary trail that was pretty steep. When we reached the top the views were spectacular of Garrett Bay and distant Canadian islands. We took the main trail on the return and it was well graded and wide for an easy descent. This included a spur trail for a side trip to the military cemetery. Mostly the deaths were due to drowning or unknown causes. We also went to the Visitor Center for some great insight on the history of the area.

I would rate this as an Easy hike. There are no elevation changes to speak of. Nice forest trail if you need something out of the sun on a warm day. Goes past the dinghy dock on Garrison Bay where boaters come to shore. There is a spur to Bell Point (marked by small sign) about half way around the trail; at the Point you can look out to Wescott Bay and climb down to the shore if you like. There is a short section along the east portion that looks like an old cart path which is very lovely when the sun shines through the trees; almost like a fairy tale woodland path. In the spring, we have seen carpets of small white flowers here.

This place is beautiful!!! If you’re visiting Lopez island you must go here. We took amazing pictures. The “hike” there took us like 15-20 minutes with our 2 year old.

One of the best trips of my life was when my little brother and I took our bicycles to the island and road around for three days, camping along the ocean.
